FOREWORD
I have never met Cy Wakeman. Strange, huh? Usually the Foreword of a book is written by one of the authors buddies. But thats not the case here. Her editor sent me her book to read for a cover blurb. If I had read it and hated it, I could have said so, or I could have said nothing. I didnt need to say something nice to make her feel good or to sustain our friendship. I didnt owe anyone anything on this one. So I opened the book with little expectation and no pressure to enjoy it. To my surprise, I read the whole thing in one sitting and found myself saying Yes! and That sounds like me! So I happily wrote a blurb and sent it to the editor because I genuinely liked the book. Wait. Thats not exactly true; I loved the book. Which is a bit odd for me because I hate most business books. Its true. Ive read more than 4,000 books in the past twenty years. Thats right: 4,000. I dont know anyone who has read more books than I have. And most of the books were crap. A few were pretty good. Then there were the rare few that were outstanding. This is one of those outstanding books.
Why would I say that? What makes the book outstanding? Its real. Of course the other books were real too: real idealistic, real nice, and giving real bad advice not even remotely tied to the real world. Most were also real boring. Cys book isnt idealistic. It isnt even all that nice. Its real world with real advice: no pie-in-the-sky BS here. It also isnt boring. What more could you ask for? How about this: this book is well written. Its compelling. Its honest. Its a fun read. It isnt some stupid parable. And it makes you think. Bingo! For me, that is the ultimate test for a book and that is what makes the book outstanding: it makes you think. Oh yeah, heres another thing I like: it makes you uncomfortable. That fits my whole approach, so thats probably why I like it so much.
