What the Experts Are Saying About
Punctuation Plain and Simple
"Very successful and practical contribution...maintains a nice balance between rules that most of us still obey, on the one hand, and those many variations on the rules that are responses to oral speech, on the other hand. An up-to-date treatment of a tricky subject, and it should be a useful guide to writers in many fields of endeavor."
Walker Gibson, former president of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE)
"This book reveals why the author is a master of the craft of using punctuation as an aid to writing clearly. The text serves as a trustworthy source for the novice, as well as the professional writer, who wants to communicate precisely and accurately. I am pleased to find that Professor Alward deals not only with the orthodox and standard uses of punctuation but also includes illustrations of contemporary uses of this system of writing signs that help us to communicate unambiguously. When I do any writing, I always have Punctuation Plain and Simple within reach, along with a thesaurus, a dictionary, and an American-English usage guide."
Wallace L.Goldstein, Ph.D., author of Teaching English as a Second Language and "The Fringe Benefits of Writing"
"Any professional putting pen to paper or finger to keyboard can avoid either embarrassment or wasting time simply by keeping Punctuation Plain and Simple in easy reach. It's a rule book that reads less like a rule book than a conversation with the authors. I love it."
Jim Trelease, author of The Read-Aloud Handbook

Acknowledgments
Many of my students and colleagues at Westfield (Massachusetts) State College have made suggestions and special contributions to this book on punctuation. Much of the book is an almost nongrammatical approach based on the original editions titled Punctuation: A Rationale of American Practice, copyrighted in 1966 and again in 1967. I am still indebted to Dr. Meg Colo, then my student assistant at the college, for the index that I continued to use in the 1988 edition, authored by me and my youngest son Dale, as well as in this edition.
Dale contributed a younger-student view of the book as we co-authored the much-needed simplified, almost nongrammatical approach. Among the many examples are the autobiographical ones and the Miss Piggy ones by one of my former students, JuneAnn Wolowicz.
Many others have helped to make this book what it is today. Over a period of 30 years, colleagues, students, friends, and family have in some way contributed to its content. The combination of suggestions, comments, and questions posed by Betsy Sheldon and Suzanne Gruber at Career Press was the catalyst that helped Jean and me to finalize this book. Punctuation Plain and Simple will now be even more helpful to all writers not only in improving their punctuation skills but also in refuting the structure and creativity of their verbal messages.
My co-author, my wife Jean, is also an authority in the field of punctuation and grammar. Whereas I may overlook an error or lack of clarity in my pedagogical presentation, she is able to produce correctness and better syntax for the student's comprehension.
