Series Introduction
Power engineering is the oldest and most traditional of the various subgenres within electrical engineering, yet no other area of modern technology is currently undergoing a more dramatic revolution in both technology and industry structure. This first book in Marcel Dekker's Power Engineering Series covers the portion of the power system closest to the electric consumer and most critical to achieving high quality. The Power Distribution Planning Reference Book provides a modern source of information for distribution planners and engineers who must meet demands for ever greater performance while working in an environment of intense cost containment and regulatory scrutiny.
Not since Westinghouse's famous green book (last revised in 1965) has any reference text addressed the layout and design of power distribution systems in such a comprehensive manner, from subtransmission through the service level. While that and other, even older, distribution texts contain a wealth of information still useful to modern distribution engineers, many of their concepts and approaches are outdated. All of the classical distribution systems books focus on electrical performance, while treating cost and reliability as important but clearly only consequential aspects of design. In contrast, the Power Distribution Planning Reference Book emphasizes economy as the primary goal of distribution design, and examines in great detail how distribution systems can be designed to achieve adequate performance and reliability at the lowest possible cost, and how cost interacts with electrical performance, reliability and

customer service quality. It also covers the application of computerized analysis and optimization methods that were only a dream four decades ago, when most of the classic texts on distribution systems were written. In addition, it covers a host of very recent concepts, including value-based planning, budget-constrained planning, spatial T&D load forecasting, multiscenario planning, and deregulated utility planning.
As both the author of the Power Distribution Planning Reference Book and the editor of the Power Engineering Series, I am proud that this book was chosen to inaugurate this new and highly important group of books. Like all the books planned for Marcel Dekker's Power Engineering Series, this first is designed to provide modern technology in a context of proven, practical application and to be useful as a reference book as well as for self-study and advanced classroom use. The Power Engineering Series will eventually include books covering the entire field of power engineering, in all of its specialties and sub-subgenres, all aimed at providing practicing power engineers with the knowledge and techniques they need to meet the electric industry's challenges in the 21st century.
