Chronic venous disease is a common condition, with a prevalence as high as 50% in industrialized countries worldwide. Of those, about 20-25% of women and 10-15% of men have visible varicose veins. Varicose vein treatment has become an increasingly multidisciplinary field, and one that has seen cutting-edge advances and significant growth.

Felipe B. Collares, Salomao Faintuch, and a team of venous disease experts have compiled, Varicose Veins, a concise book that covers the full range of interventional procedures for venous insufficiency. Following introductory chapters on anatomy and pathophysiology, the authors guide readers through the clinical exam, imaging, compression therapy, and various minimally invasive techniques. Highly practical and an affordable alternative to larger published tomes.

Key Highlights

  • Step-by-step guide on core venous interventions - from compression therapy to sclerotherapy - ambulatory phlebectomy to endovascular ablation
  • Illustrations delineate anatomy and specific treatment modalities
  • Clinical pearls on patient safety and preventing complications
  • Discussion of emerging endovascular approaches that do not require administration of tumescent anesthesia

This handy resource is a must-have for trainees and veteran physicians. The practical and focused layout provides a well-rounded reference for all specialists who perform varicose vein procedures - interventional radiologists, vascular surgeons, phlebologists, cardiologists, and dermatologists.

Foreword

Varicose Veins: Outpatient Interventional Series is a complete, well-illustrated, and easily understandable textbook on varicose veins and their current management.

The first two chapters review anatomy and pathophysiology. The overall anatomy of the superficial venous system is clearly presented as well as the histologic difference between arteries and veins. This chapter lays the anatomic groundwork for the management of pathology of the superficial venous system.

The physiology and pathophysiology of the venous system is then succinctly reviewed, integrating both the superficial and deep venous components. The physiology of normal venous return is hemodynamically explained, serving as the basis for the subsequent pathology of venous valvular incompetence at the various anatomic levels.

The initial patient-physician interaction is well covered in the chapter on the Clinical Exam. The authors generously include their Initial Visit Questionnaire for others to use, or it can serve as a foundation for a revised version for individual practices. Objective documentation of the physical findings, appropriate use of the CEAP classification, the Venous Clinical Severity Score, and the CVIQ-20 QOL questionnaire are reviewed. This overview serves as a model of how the patient's presentation should be memorialized in the medical record. The authors also review the advantages of photographic documentation in the medical record. This chapter is appropriately concluded with a discussion of managing patient expectations and establishing realisticgoals for treatment.
