Important note: Medicine is an ever-changing science undergoing continual development. Research and clinical experience are continually expanding our knowledge, in particular our knowledge of proper treatment and drug therapy. Insofar as this book mentions any dosage or application, readers may rest assured that the authors, editors, and publishers have made every effort to ensure that such references are in accordance with the state of knowledge at the time of production of the book.
Nevertheless, this does not involve, imply, or express any guarantee or responsibility on the part of the publishers in respect to any dosage instructions and forms of applications stated in the book. Every user is requested to examine carefully the manufacturers leaflets accompanying each drug and to check, if necessary in consultation with a physician or specialist, whether the dosage schedules mentioned therein or the contraindications stated by the manufacturers differ from the statements made in the present book. Such examination is particularly important with drugs that are either rarely used or have been newly released on the market. Every dosage schedule or every form of application used is entirely at the user's own risk and responsibility. The authors and publishers request every user to report to the publishers any discrepancies or inaccuracies noticed. If errors in this work are found after publication, errata will be posted at www.thieme.com on the product description page.
Some of the product names, patents, and registered designs referred to in this book are in fact registered trademarks or proprietary names even though specific reference to this fact is not always made in the text. To my parents for their unconditional love and support throughout my life and to my brother for our cherished childhood memories and friendship. To my wife Juliana, who moved from the other side of the planet to be with me, changed my world for the better, and showed me the meaning of unconditional love by giving me our children Eduardo and Rafael.

To the Creator, Tammy, David, Jonathan, Rachel, Papai, and Mame. Everything I have achieved and will ever achieve in life is because of you and dedicated to you. If I were to explain here how much I owe you and appreciate you, there would be very few pages left to discuss Varicose Veins.

Foreword
Varicose Veins: Outpatient Interventional Series is a complete, well-illustrated, and easily understandable textbook on varicose veins and their current management.
The first two chapters review anatomy and pathophysiology. The overall anatomy of the superficial venous system is clearly presented as well as the histologic difference between arteries and veins. This chapter lays the anatomic groundwork for the management of pathology of the superficial venous system.
The physiology and pathophysiology of the venous system is then succinctly reviewed, integrating both the superficial and deep venous components. The physiology of normal venous return is hemodynamically explained, serving as the basis for the subsequent pathology of venous valvular incompetence at the various anatomic levels.
The initial patient-physician interaction is well covered in the chapter on the Clinical Exam. The authors generously include their Initial Visit Questionnaire for others to use, or it can serve as a foundation for a revised version for individual practices. Objective documentation of the physical findings, appropriate use of the CEAP classification, the Venous Clinical Severity Score, and the CVIQ-20 QOL questionnaire are reviewed. This overview serves as a model of how the patient's presentation should be memorialized in the medical record. The authors also review the advantages of photographic documentation in the medical record. This chapter is appropriately concluded with a discussion of managing patient expectations and establishing realisticgoals for treatment.
