Dedication
This book is dedicated to my late, great mamaThe Champion of All Things Chocolate, The Super High Sweatpants Savant, The Chardonnay Sipper, The Cigarette Flicker, The Oakland As #1 Fan, The F-Bomb Bombshell, The Laughing Pumpkin, The Red-Headed Rager, The Ol Irish Avenger, The Always UnpredictablePatty Hourigan, aka Mom.
Although she never quite understood what I doas her dietary advice was pretty much to drink a bottle of wine and smoke two packs of cigarettes a dayshe always supported me in whatever I did. For that, I am forever grateful and forever in debt.
So in addition to this book, I promise to flick a few cigarettes at some unsuspecting tourists today in her honor. Im totally kidding. Or am I? That is a tale for another time

The Great Carb Debate
American Diabetes Association-style high-carb diets vs. Zone-style moderate-carb diets vs. Paleo-style low-carb diets vs. Atkins-style no-carb dietswhich is best for slashing body fat and looking good with your shirt off, pants off, or walking around naked?
Evolutionary Theorists vs. Exercise Physiologists, Whole Grain Groupies vs. Carb-Cutting Cultswho ultimately wins the belly-fat battle?
Will eating carbs transform your physique into a High-Performance Ferrarilean, sleek, flashy, fast, and powerful? Or will it destroy your life and leave you with nothing but a bloated van down by the river body?
Fewer than 50 grams or over 500, 7% of calories or 77%what is the magic number to finally conquer Carb-o-nomics?
Youve heard that second-hand carb intake is dangerous. Is this true?
The Carbohydrate Warstheyre a real doozy. They have been raging in gyms, kitchens, and nutrition conferences for decades and will continue to do so into eternity. Theres religious-like passion and cult-like followings on both sides of the fence. The pendulum of popularity seems to swing back and forth between the two.
So unless you take a little time to educate yourself, you will continue to be Dazed & Carb Confused. Youll keep following the trends, marketing madness, and cookie-cutter diets instead of finding what work best for you. You will yo-yo back and forth between quick-fix extremes and rapid rebounds instead of living lean year round by following a customized lifestyle plan.
Ditching the Dietary Dogma
You want the Carb Truth? Do you think you can handle it?
Both sides of the battle can be right. Both approaches can work. Real world results and evidence among athletes, fitness models, and physique enthusiasts prove that. So does a plethora of research. For the geeks like me, youll get to see a lot of this research later. For the non-geeks, it is separated out so you can skip over it. The main goal of this book is to get you on a targeted fat-loss plan, not to make you fall asleep in a lecture.
Carb confusion in the public and problems in the individual person arise when fitness writers and coaches try to slot everyone into one universal system and proclaim it is the best for everyone, everywhere.
Im an x eater or I follow y diet, and of course that is the only way to eat regardless of body type, activity levels, current health status, metabolic condition, and physique or performance goals. All other approaches are worthless.
It doesnt work that way, at least off the magazine pages, out here in the real Fat Loss Streets. This inability to see the big nutrition picture generally happens because of a few reasons:
. Someone personally achieved great results on a particular plandramatic weight loss, improvements in overall health and wellness, or some type of athletic achievement. As a result, they are passionate about sharing it with others.. Someones personal identity has become tied to the associated lifestyle or community aspects of a particular diet.. Someones job or revenue stream is tied to a diet and they are trying to sell you something associated with ita system, a lifestyle, a supplement, etc.
The diet industry has lost the principle of specificitymatching your plan to your individual situation and goal. There is no Perfect Diet that can claim a throne. The next time someone claims to be king, punch them in the high-carb breadbasket or kick them in the low-carb nuts.
There are multiple effective diets based on a variety of different situations and goals. We will get you to the right one based on where you currently are and where you ultimately want to go.
And dont worry. While the science behind the strategies can be complicated, the actual strategieswhat to do in the real world to get resultsare straightforward and simple. Many in the fitness industry try to overcomplicate them because they love to hear themselves talk, need to justify their credentials, or are trying to sell you a bunch of bullshit that you dont really need.
So you, the dude or diva just trying to get the fat loss job done, have a few options.
If you have little tolerance for long-winded explanations and justifications, you can simply get in, skim through the chapter titles and headlines, get your targeted numbers, get out, and get started with your plan. I will not be offended if you are just looking to take action. Actually, Ill be thrilled, because action is what will bring you real world results, not spandex theory, talk, or debate.
If you dig the why you should apply, then pull up a chair and get your popcorn (regular or low-carb) ready.
The Downside of Mismatched Diets
High Carbs & The Sedentary
Does the following scenario sound familiar?
You are doing everything you think you should be doing to eat healthy. You drink your fruit smoothies, eat your probiotic yogurts, have your 100-calorie low-fat snack packs, and get all of your sandwiches on wheat bread as part of your 7-11 servings of whole grains a day.
If the Food Pyramid Police came to your house and gave your diet a grade, youd get an A+.
But despite your healthy diet, problems have arisen in Food Pyramid Fantasyland. Slowly but surely, youve consistently put on weight each year. Today you woke up shocked and appalled. You are teetering on the edge of obesity. What the hell happened?
But there is more to this Healthy Horror Story.
Like global warming, your blood pressure and cholesterol levels have crept upwards. Despite doing the best you can to eat right, you had to start taking a few prescription medications to control them. Your doctor also says your fasting blood glucose is high, which means you have pre-diabetes.
Maybe you are confused. You are doing everything now that you were doing back in your 20s or 30s, back when you were healthy, fit, and vibrant.
