To the teachers and residents in physiology for their endeavour to dissipate and acquire knowledge. My parents and teachers for their blessings my children, Aruj, Bhawna and Arushi, for their patience and tolerance shown to loss of many precious moments and finally to my husband, Dr AK Khurana, for his understanding, encouragement and invaluable guidance
Indu Khurana
First edition of this book, published in 2006, was primarily aimed for the needs of undergraduate students. Undoubtedly, the text in some parts was a bit detailed, and this very fact was duly mentioned in the preface. However, it was never anticipated that it will become the book of choice for postgraduates in physiology. The undergraduate students also appreciated the text, but always demanded its reduced version. Such a feedback inspired the author to bring out another volume entitled Medical Physiology for Undergraduate Students in 2012. In view of the fast changing concepts in physiology and to cater to the needs of postgraduates, the second edition of Textbook of Medical Physiology has been thoroughly revised and updated. However, even undergraduates will find it as a useful resource for in-depth understanding of the subject and also for preparing for various postgraduate entrance tests.
Thoroughly revised and updated second edition retains its well accepted unique style of organization of the text in three parts and twelve sections.
Presentation of the text with various levels of headings, subheadings, boldface and italics has been maintained to help the students easily understand, retain and reproduce.
Text has been updated incorporating the recent advances in each section including more aspects of molecular physiology.
Applied physiology has been updated with recent concepts on pathophysiology, and recent advances in the basic investigations and therapeutic principles.
The book has been transformed into a fully four colored text enhancing lucidity and understanding of the figures and text.
To further upgrade the book, many new figures, tables and flowcharts have been added.
Second edition of the book has been possible as a result of active criticism, suggestions and generous help of many teachers and students. Surely I owe sincere thanks to them all. Having Arushi Khurana, MD, from the Department of Internal Medicine, University of Connecticut, USA as a co-author has been very useful in updating the text, especially the applied and molecular aspects. I bow with reverence to my teachers: Prof B K Maini, Prof R K Marya, Prof P I Singh and Prof K K Mahajan for grooming me for this task. I wish to express by indebtedness to my husband, Sr. Prof A K Khurana, my son Dr Aruj K Khurana and daughter-in-law Dr Bhawna Piplani Khurana, who have not only helped me during each and every step but also have contributed the updated chapter on Sense of Vision. Sr Prof Sushma Sood, HOD, Physiology has always encouraged and helped me by her academic discussions with a friendly approach. I am thankful to all the faculty members and residents of my department for their co-operation. Of incalculable help to me in updating this edition have been Dr Itika Singh and Dr Harminder. Dr Itika Singh has also contributed as co-author of the chapter on Physiology of Body Temperature Regulation. I am also thankful to Dr Rakesh Gupta, who is just my younger brother and now elevated as Director of PGIMS, Rohtak, Prof Sarla Hooda, a sisterly friend and Registrar UHS and Prof V K Jain, Pro Vice Chancellor UHS, Rohtak. It is my special pleasure to thank Prof O P Kalra, Vice Chancellor, Pt. B D Sharma, UHS, Rohtak for infusing academic atmosphere. The encouragement received from the friends and stalwarts in Physiology especially, Prof Rashmi Mathur, AIIMS, New Delhi, Prof Asha Gandhi, Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi, Prof Rashmi Babbar & Prof A K Jain, Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi, Dr Latika Mohan, Dean AIIMS, Rishikesh, Prof K D Singh, Principal GMC, Patiala, Prof Raj Kapoor, HOD, VMMC, New Delhi, Prof D K Aggarwal, JLN Medical College, AMU, Aligarh, Prof Nilima Shankar & Prof Neelam Vaney, UCMS, New Delhi, Dr Nandini Kapoor, HOD, GMC, Chandigarh, needs special mention.
