BREEDING CRITERIA CODES
Symbols on the maps represent the highest level of reported breeding status in that township. Three levels are mapped: possible, probable, and confirmed. A fourth category, observed, for species recorded but believed not to be breeding in the block was available for field checklists but "observed" records are not plotted on the maps. The types of evidence in-chided in the three breeding status categories are given briefly below. More complete descriptions are given in chapter 1.
Possible: Male (singing or not) or female observed in suitable nesting habitat during its breeding season.
Probable: Pair observed in suitable nesting habitat during the breeding season of the species; territorial behavior in the same location over a span of at least a week; courtship, copulation, visiting probable nest site, or agitated behavior; nest building by wrens or cavity excavation by woodpeckers; seven or more territorial males.
Confirmed: Nest building by birds other than wrens or woodpeckers; brood patch for a bird in hand; distraction display; used nest or eggshells; young too immature to have traveled far; adults carrying food or fecal sacs; active nests.
