Chapter 1 - The CrossFit Games
T his is the annual games held to decide the fittest person on Earth. The inaugural event took place in 2007 and since then, every summer, we have had CrossFit games. At the games, the athletes are asked to complete workouts about which they have no prior knowledge. The briefing is given just hours before the start of the event. These events do not occur in any CrossFit regimen and stay as surprise elements. In the past few editions, we saw events such as a softball throw and a rough-water swim. The idea is to have the athletes be ready for anything. Thus, the venue of the games becomes the place to decide the Fittest Person on Earth.
Online formatting since 2011 has allowed participation of people from all over the world. The CrossFit Open is the event where you have a new workout each week. If one wishes to take part, one should complete the workout, videotape the action and give the scores obtained online. You may have validation from a CrossFit affiliate, instead of giving the videotape, if you so desire.
The best athletes from each region advance to the next round of the CrossFit Opens until they make it to the last round. This will take two months to complete. You have separate groups such as per gender, teenagers, and masters.
Criticism against CrossFit methods
T he level of intensity is high and the movements have undue brusqueness. Critics are quick to say that this kind of exercise is not recommended as the movements may result in injury. They also question whether CrossFit coaches who are insufficiently experienced is a good idea. Being under-qualified, those training under them may be misdirected.
In reply, CrossFit Inc. has said that one must use proper scaling of the exercises along with changes where they expect injuries to happen. CrossFit is safe, even for those who do not have a good technique. But, once they develop these techniques, then the CrossFit regimen becomes safe.
General fitness training results in 2.4-3.1 percent of injuries for every 1000 hours of training and that is the same result one sees in CrossFit training.
