BROTHERS IN HEALING FOREVER
Dude, do you remember the good old days when you could eat pizza all day and still look slim and toned? When going to the beach was a joy, not an embarrassment because of your belly fat? Maybe youve seen your physician and been told to lose weight because your blood sugar, or glucose, is up and so are your cholesterol numbers.
Sound familiar? If this is you, youre not alone. There are millions and millions of men like you, not only in the United States but now all over the world.
Unluckily for you, you probably have metabolic syndrome: excess weight, high blood glucose, high blood pressure, and your blood tests show your cholesterol numbers are heading the wrong way. This is not good news because your risk of heart disease and cancer is increasing, which means your chance of dying prematurely is also increasing. I assume this is not your plan for right now.
So what do you do about it?
You might go to see your friendly neighborhood doctor, a very reasonable thing to do, and chances are the doctor will recommend that you improve your diet and start some form of exercise.
Sounds promising; sounds like you have hopes of a thinner, healthier future. Cool.
The only problem with that plan is that youre not sure exactly what is a good diet or what type of exercise is right for you. The devil is in the details, and there just arent enough of them.
So you try something on your own with resolve and lots of enthusiasm but, unfortunately, lifestyle change is difficult and things go downhill fast.
Perhaps in three months youll recheck your labs and see that the situation still has not improved. Your doctor is now offering you a prescription medication that you will be taking for the rest of your life!
Dude! The situation is bad.
If this describes you, you are not alone. The most recent research for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that 71 million Americans over the age of 20 have elevated cholesterol, and the number is rising.
So what is wrong with taking a small, white pill every day for the rest of your life? For some people the answer is: nothing. But there are many others who just dont fancy being dependent on a pill for the rest of their lives to keep them from having a heart attack.
I get it.
And for those people who think that they can just medicate their way to happiness and health, I have some bad news.
In April 2014, researchers from the University of Tokyo published the results of a 10-year, 28,000-person study that showed that people who started taking cholesterol-lowering medication (like Lipitor, Zocor, Crestor and the rest of the gang) started eating more and gaining more weight, compared to the people not on these drugs.
Now from the outset, let me be very clear about two things: first, I dont believe for a second that the medications cause increases in appetite and weight gain; and second, statin medications are lifesaving for the right patients.
The point, my friends, is that this study clearly shows that people who want to rely on small, white pills do just thatthey take the pills and continue to eat whatever they wish with reckless abandon. So they put on weight, and pretty soon their cholesterol isnt the only thing they have to contend with. Now they have blood glucose issues, gout and high blood pressure, and one simple pill becomes a whole pillbox.
I see guys like this every day. Ive literally seen tens of thousands of people for weight, cholesterol and blood glucose issues over the past seven years.
So if you find yourself overweight with troubling lab test results, I know exactly what you need. This is not my first rodeo, and unlike almost all other diet books ever written, my eating plan is proven to work, based on two published clinical studies.
Again, this is all I do for a living, so I can tell you what will work and what wontwith all the details you will need for a total lifestyle makeover that includes an eating plan that is not so difficult that you wont enjoy eating anymore.
What you are about to read is exactly what I have told the last 10,000 people I have seen like you.
The book is divided into five chapters.
describes how metabolic syndrome is bad for you, along with all the other facts you should know to get you motivated to get with the program.
talks about all the important lab tests, so youll really know what is going on before the journey begins. I also go over all the various hormones that can help or hinder you in your quest to find your mojo again.
is the actual eating plansimply written, used 10,000 times and has worked like a charm, always.
contains approximately 60 recipes to give you some idea of the variety of dishes you can eat. As my wife, four kids, three dogs, two cats and fish will all assure you, I cannot cook anything that is remotely edible. You will therefore be pleased to know that these are not my recipes but those of my incredibly talented colleague, Gavin Pritchard, who combines his encyclopedic knowledge of nutrition as a practicing registered clinical dietician with his flair for and love of cooking (he is a trained chef). Gavins easy-to-follow recipes are going to inspire both you and anyone else you decide to buddy up with for this lifestyle challenge. Hell show you that life doesnt end on the day you start a diet!
gives helpful hints that will keep you going, including specific details on the other vital things like exercise, sleep and stress reduction that you will need for the new you.
This program takes 12 weeks, and by the end of this period, you should have lost 20 pounds (9 kg) and watched your blood glucose, cholesterol and pants size plummet. You will sleep better, have more energy and start to feel your mojo the way you did when you were toned and 20!
Like every other doctor, I am a scientist, so I promise you two things:
Every statement I make is based on solid scientific evidence, and at the end of the book, I have included an extensive reference section so that you can check out the details.
In an effort not to completely bore you, I am going to talk only about the details of a few scientific studies in each chapter.
Lets get started, then.
