Automated Driving and Driver Assistance Systems: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Automated Driving and Driver Assistance Systems" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

Automated vehicles are set to transform the world. Automated driving vehicles are here already and undergoing serious testing in several countries around the world. This book explains the technologies in language that is easy to understand and accessible to all readers. It covers the subject from several angles but in particular shows the links to existing ADAS technologies already in use in all modern vehicles. There is a lot of hype in the media at the moment about autonomous or driverless cars, and while some manufacturers expect to have vehicles available from 2020, they will not soon take over and it will be some time before they are commonplace. However, it is very important to be ready for the huge change of direction that automated driving will take. This is the first book of its type available and complements Tom Dentons other books.

Guide
In this book you will find lots of useful and interesting information about - photo 3

In this book you will find lots of useful and interesting information about automated driving vehicles (ADVs). It is the sixth in the series:

  • Automobile Mechanical and Electrical Systems
  • Automobile Electrical and Electronic Systems
  • Automobile Advanced Fault Diagnosis
  • Electric and Hybrid Vehicles
  • Alternative Fuel Vehicles
  • Automated Driving and Driver Assistance Systems

Ideally, you will have studied the electrical book, or have some experience, before reading this one. But dont worry if not, you will still learn a lot from it. Because these new vehicles are not in common use yet, I have concentrated on outlining their systems and the associated issues. More details on service and repair will be added in future editions.

Because ADVs are new, I have also looked at some of the social and human issues related to this exciting change. Case studies are included to set some of the technologies in a time context.

Comments, suggestions and feedback are always welcome at my website:

On this site, you will also find lots of free online resources to help with your studies. Check out the final chapter for more information about the amazing resources to go with this and my other books. These resources work with the book, and are ideal for self-study or for teachers helping others to learn.

Good luck with your studies, and I hope you find automotive technology as interesting as I still do.

In this book I will cover all the key features of automated driving vehicles (ADVs) at a level that is ideal for technicians, but suitable for general consumption too. Many of the ideas picked up in this introduction chapter are examined in more detail later. The first important task is to understand why we need ADVs at all!

Definition

ADV: Automated driving vehicle

This industry commentators view is similar to my own and many others:

The economic and social benefits of autonomous driving [...] mean that it is inevitable. In fact, there may not be anything in history that provides benefits that [...] will dramatically reduce the cost of transportation for everyone. And it will enable children, [and] those with disabilities to have freedom to travel. It is difficult to find any change of technology that shows such vast benefits.
