Introduction
Would you listen to a businessman and author who has failed a hundred times and has failed miserably at that? Should you?
Well, you should.
You see, there is wisdom in listening to mistakes and failure, and you learn vicariously through the experience of others. By doing that, you get to improve a lot faster than I ever did.
Imagine setting up business after business only to see them fail. Imagine lacking the knowledge, making the mistakes, and then relapsing into a muck of failure complete with self-loathing and total lack of discipline.
What does it take to get over that?
The answer for me was my self-discipline, grit, and mental toughness that I developed over the years. And in this book, I outline not just the mistakes I made but how I bounced back from them using the lessons Ive learned. But I didnt make that transformation on my own.
I learned from countless mentors and coaches so that I could go back into my little mouse wheel and strive once again for success. A lot of them were from countless hours of reading and researching the most disciplined and successful people in history.
It took a lot of practice and perseverance to develop a shift in mindset. I drew from all of that experience when I wrote this book. It is a collection of thoughts, ideas, practices, personal experience, and coaching from some of the most disciplined people on earth.
Was it easy to try and regain self-control and muster enough willpower?
It was never easy. But the journey back to self-mastery and the friendships that I made along the way have made it all worthwhile. I have learned to apply mental fortitude and self-discipline in business, family life, and now in writing as well.
This book is my way of giving back to everyone who may have lost their way toojust like me. The lessons and practices here from mental toughness to meditation have helped me accomplish things that I never imagined I could.
If you immerse yourself in the principles that I have learned and outlined in this book, you will also learn how to put everything on the line and strive for the goal like theres nothing left to lose.
May the information here be a powerful guide for you as it was for me.
Chapter 1: The Science of Self-Discipline, Motivation, and Willpower
Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishments.
(Jim Rohn)
Do you want to enhance your self-discipline, increase your willpower, and improve self-motivation? One of the secrets to achieving all of that is to develop habits and willpower. Experts say that these are two important keys to every accomplishment that has been measured in the modern world.
Habits and Willpower: Engines behind Change and Progress
Willpower is the thing that drives us to save for our future. Habits, on the other hand, establish patterns that lead to success and progress. These principles drive us to keep on working even if we dont want to or when we dont feel like it.
It is our willpower that makes us say no to that cigarette, no to that whiskey, and no to that extra helping of cake. It is willpower that makes us hop on that treadmill, report to the gym, and be patient with a wayward child.
When willpower fails, our self-discipline fails. Where willpower pushes us to go on the right path, our actions become habits, and our habits determine what we ultimately can achieve.
The Energy/Strength Model
Willpower, habits, self-discipline, and motivation are all interrelated. They are also subjects that have been studied extensively [1] by psychiatrists and other experts as well. When it comes to self-control and self-discipline, one of the reigning theories is called the energy model, or strength model [2].
According to this model, the brain is viewed as something akin to a muscle. And just like any muscle, it is seen as one that also has a limited amount of strength. It has limits just like any other part of the body.
Can this energy source of the brain be depleted? Yes, it can be depleted via mental exertion. That means no one is disciplined all the time. Every human being will act without discipline every once in a while.
Can Self-Discipline Be Enhanced?
Again, following the energy model, the answer to the question of whether self-discipline can be improved or not, the answer is yes, you can build self-discipline and self-control [3]. Of course, not everyone agrees with the energy model. However, everyone agrees that one can increase in self-discipline with practice.
The next question now is, how do you master, or at least improve, self-discipline? Here are a few tips that you can start with. We will go over more ideas and strategies later in this book.
Forgive Yourself
Sometimes people lose motivation for change simply because they beat themselves up for past mistakes and foibles. Remember that even with all your best intentions and your best effort, you will at one time or another fall short.
All well-laid plans will fail at some time. Remember that it doesnt happen only to youit happens to everyone. If you fail, learn to acknowledge that fact. Pick yourself up and move on.
