Preface
In the latter part of the short Preface in The Chief Rivals of Corneille and Racine,1 which contains my translations of twelve tragedies by the lesser French-classical dramatists, I discussed briefly my choice of the plays selected from a larger number of possible candidates for inclusion, and then said: "There is quite enough material, it will be seen, to compose a desirable second volume, equal in size to this one, of minor French tragedies of the period." In the present book I have undertaken to do so.
I suggested that the contents of this second volume might well consist of Rotrou's Saint Genest, Du Ryer's Lucrce and Esther, Tristan l'Hermite's la Mort de Snque and Osman, "some play of La Calprende's" (la Mort de Mithridate or le Comte d'Essex), Thomas Corneille's Timocrate and Ariane, Quinault's Astrate, Pchantr's Gta, Campistron's Tiridate, and either Rotrou's Laure perscute or Hardy's pre-classical Mariamne.
