Preface
No great period of drama can be properly understood by knowing its major figures alone. These major figures themselves cannot be properly understood without some knowledge of the plays of their lesser contemporaries. This has long been realized in regard to Elizabethan drama and Shakespeare; and there have been many single-volume collections of Elizabethan plays for both the college student and the general reader.
The same is not the case in regard to the great period of French drama, the so-called "classical" period of the seventeenth century. There, only the major figuresCorneille, Molire, and Racinehave received much attention. Most college professors of French, even, have read few of the plays of the minor dramatists of that century; the very names of those dramatists are almost unknown; and even the best of their plays are little read, even in France. Yet the reasons for having some acquaintance with Shakespeare's fellow-dramatists can be applied to argue with no less validity that anyone interested in French-classical drama should know something of those who wrote in rivalry with Corneille, Molire, and Racine.
There is a serious obstacle, however, to one's doing so. There are no modern collections of the best dramas of the lesser French-classical playwrights; these dramas can be found only in very old, out-of-print editions or in small, scholarly reprints of single plays, and they are often unobtainable in any form. That situation makes it difficult (if not impossible save in universities with exceptional libraries) to give courses in French comparable to courses in Elizabethan drama such as are commonly given to advanced students of English; and there have been no English translations of any of these plays for English readers whose knowledge of French is inadequate or totally lacking, yet who are interested in drama and would like a proper orientation in this important period of its flourishing.
No doubt the greatest need is for a well-chosen collection of some of these plays, printed in modern French. For me, however, the editing of such a volume would be an impractical and uncongenial task. The next-best thing if not quite the bestand a thing which also needs to be done in any caseis to bring out a collection of these plays translated into English verse; and this I accordingly do.
