JOHN COLMER was educated at Oxford and has taught at the Universities of Khartoum, Birmingham and Adelaide, where he is the Jury Professor of English. He has published widely on the Romantic poets, and is the author of Coleridge: Critic of Society (1959), Approaches to the Novel (1967), E. M. Forster: The Personal Voice (1975) and Coleridge to "Catch-22": Images of Society (1978), which contains a discussion of Lawrence's social thought. He has also edited Church and State (1976) for the Collected Coleridge, and three anthologies of poetry: New Choice, Mainly Modern and Pattern and Voice.
H. M. DALESKI is Professor of English at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, and author of The Forked Flame: A Study of D. H. Lawrence (1965), Dickens and the Art of Analogy (1970), Joseph Conrad: The Way of Dispossession (1977) and The Divided Heroine: A Recurrent Pattern in Six English Novels (1983).
PAUL DELANY is Professor of English at Simon Fraser University, and author of British Autobiography in the Seventeenth Century (1969) and D. H. Lawrence's Nightmare: The Writer and his Circle in the Years of the Great War (1978).
ROBERTS W. FRENCH is Professor of English at the University of Massachusetts. He has written on Whitman for the Walt Whitman Review, and other essays have appeared in College English, The Nation, Milton Quarterly and the Massachusetts Review.
GEORGE P. LANDOW is Professor of English at Brown University, and author of The Aesthetic and Critical Theories of John Ruskin (1971), Holman Hunt and Typological Symbol (1979), Victorian Types, Victorian Shadows (1980) and Images of Crisis: Literary Iconology, 1750 to the Present (1982).
ROBERT LANGBAUM is James Branch Cabell Professor of English and American Literature at the University of Virginia, and author of The Poetry of Experience (1963), The Modern Spirit (1970) and Isak Dinesen's Art (1975). His latest bookThe Mysteries of Identity: A
