Introduction
Whats your idea of an unforgettable journey? Watching a country unfurl outside a train window, scaling the peak of a sky-grazing summit or simply seeing the world float by from the sun-kissed deck of a boat? Whatever it is, theres one thing thats true: often its the journey, rather than the destination, that matters most.
When youre battling your way against the flow of other walkers on a city street, pushing onto a crowded commuter train or stuck in traffic on a gridlocked road, its hard to remember that getting from A to B can be pleasurable. The modern world is constantly on the move, with everyone striving to get anywhere fast, but when you slow down and take the scenic route, youre guaranteed experiences that would otherwise pass you by. Sampling a freshly fried delicacy from a roadside stall, talking to carriage companions, sleeping under the stars these are the little details that make up a trip of a lifetime.
In Unforgettable Journeys , weve picked the worlds best adventures, from cruising around Alaska and Antarctica to train journeys in Zambia and Zimbabwe. Of course, the big-hitters are covered riding the Orient Express, driving Route 66 and walking the Camino de Santiago but we also take you off the beaten path, cycling around Botswana, kayaking through Finnish lakeland and scaling the cirques of La Runion on foot. Weve organized the book by types of transport, so whether youre an avid hiker, cyclist or driver, or love to be on the water or on the rails, weve got you covered.
Were certain that youll find inspiration while leafing through this book, but its your own experiences that will stay with you forever. So dont just turn the page pack your bags, and get out and explore the world.

ON FOOT
Walking is so much more than getting from A to B: its about connecting to the past and following in the footsteps of pilgrims and adventurers; escaping the crowds and striking out on your own. Something new lies around every corner, whether its pretty villages, native wildlife or superlative views. All of this from the simple, almost meditative, act of placing one foot in front of the other.

Soaking in the view from Mount Abraham in Maines western mountains
Black bears and moose, the scent of smoky campfires and slopes blanketed in fiery maple await on the gargantuan Appalachian Trail, a multi-sensory and multi-seasonal experience. Conceived in 1921 by conservationist Benton MacKaye, this trail the king of American wilderness routes was completed in 1937. Today, over 2 million people take to the trail each year, but fewer than 25 per cent of hikers tackle the entire route at once.
Most thru-hikers start in Georgias rugged Blue Ridge Mountains in March or April, following the warm weather as it creeps north to reach Mount Katahdin in Maine before mid-October, when the leaves start to erupt in autumn colour. One of the most popular sections of the trail navigates the Great Smoky Mountains, the countrys most visited national park, on the border between North Carolina and Tennessee. Wispy fog explains their smoky epithet and veils herds of elk, fire lookout towers and the Appalachians highest peak Clingmans Dome. As spring matures, thru-hikers cross the mountains into Tennessee, where clumps of delicate bluets and other wildflowers shadow the trail. In Virginia, everything suddenly changes overlooks, such as McAfee Knob, reveal more pastoral scenes where forest blends with farmland.
