The historical dictionaries present essential information on a broad range of subjects, including American and world history, art, business, cities, countries, cultures, customs, film, global conflicts, international relations, literature, music, philosophy, religion, sports, and theater. Written by experts, all contain highly informative introductory essays of the topic and detailed chronologies that, in some cases, cover vast historical time periods but still manage to heavily feature more recent events.
Brief AZ entries describe the main people, events, politics, social issues, institutions, and policies that make the topic unique, and entries are cross-referenced for ease of browsing. Extensive bibliographies are divided into several general subject areas, providing excellent access points for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more. Additionally, maps, photographs, and appendixes of supplemental information aid high school and college students doing term papers or introductory research projects. In short, the historical dictionaries are the perfect starting point for anyone looking to research in these fields.

Norwegian soldier and World War II commando born in Kristiania (Oslo) on 13 December 1917. He fought against the German invasion of Norway in April 1940 before retreating to Sweden, where he was interned briefly. Following his release, he returned to occupied Norway as a courier between Norway and Sweden for the British legation in Stockholm. Arrested by Swedish police and deported, he made his way through the Soviet Union to Africa and the United States to Great Britain, where he joined the Norwegian Independent Company and was trained as a saboteur. Baalsrud was sent with 11 other men to Norway in March 1943 in order to organize sabotage groups in the Arctic north of the country. While waiting to go ashore from the fishing boat which carried them from Shetland, they were ambushed by a German patrol. Of the 12 men in the group, only Baalsrud escaped death or capture. With the assistance of several individuals who risked their own lives to help him, Baalsrud survived the treacherous mountain terrain, avalanches, freezing temperatures, and frostbite that forced him to amputate several of his own toes before finally reaching Sweden nearly three months after the ordeal had begun. After the war, he helped to establish and actively supported the Norwegian Disabled Veterans Association (Krigsinvalideforbundet), assisting wounded and disabled veterans. Baalsruds story was first told by the British writer David Howarth,
