All books are a journey from first thoughts to realisation. This book was inspired and motivated by our appreciation of the many children, young people and their families whose lives we have briefly shared, and whose paths through life we value. We thank them all, including those who have provided considered feedback on many of the drafts of chapters.
We express our gratitude to our colleagues at Jnkping University, Sweden, Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust UK, and the Australian Catholic University, who supported the editors during the preparation of this book, and to the staff of Mac Keith Press for their encouragement, guidance and patience throughout. We are also sincerely appreciative of the authorship groups who contributed to the book the work here represents a serious and ongoing commitment to changing the landscape of the journeys of those with childhood-onset disability and the important people in their lives.
Heartfelt thanks are also extended to our families for their tolerance of the many late night and early morning meetings across continents which allowed this work to develop. Special appreciation goes to our husbands: Wes Imms for unstinting support and long nights of discussion that provoked thoughtful changes in direction and fruitful connections across fields of endeavour and Adam Green for his diligence in proofreading many chapters. The cover illustration is a graphic design by Adam Green of the photograph From Overcoming to Enjoying. We are grateful to the photographer, Mai Anh Le, for permission to adapt the photo and Adam for his artistry.
