Not the power to remember, but its very opposite, the power to forget, is a necessary condition for our existence.

~ LETTER FROM INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE

More than tax and equal to death, dementia is a certainty of life. If you live long enough, you will either develop dementia or care for a loved one with the mind-robbing curse. Tax may be avoided financially by reducing personal income or legally by the modification of tax laws, but no amount of money or authority can prevent dementia or death. However, unlike death, dementia is deferrable and may even be preventable.

Dementia affected 500,000 Canadians in 2010. The current life expectancy for Canadian women is 83 years, and men, 78 years; an increase of seven and nine years respectively from 20 years ago. And exponential advancements in medical sciences support the continuance of lengthened longevity so that most new births in Canada now can expect to be centenarians.

South of the border, more than 5 million Americans currently have Alzheimers disease, and this number is expected to reach 13 million by 2050. In 2009, Alzheimers disease was the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States, a ranking that has risen steadily during the past decade. Medicare expenditures for Alzheimers disease alone in 2005 were $91 billion, and were estimated to balloon to $160 billion by 2010an increase of $70 billion in just five years. Aggregate health care expenditures for dementia are projected to exceed $183 billion in 2011 and reach $1.1 trillion by 2050.

And dementia is a plague not only in the industrialized world. An estimated 60% of people with dementia live in developing countries, and that number is believed to increase at a much greater rate than in developed countries.

Health care authorities are just awakening to the looming dementia tsunami that will surely flood the world in approximately 30 years, but governments have yet to formulate comprehensive nationaland more importantly, globalplans to minimize this imminent pandemic. There is currently no cure for Alzheimers disease, the most common form of dementia. In spite of spending billions researching numerous drugs in clinical trials over the past two decades, the pharmaceutical industry has been able to prove only two classes of medications for the symptomatic treatment of Alzheimers disease. These medications merely slow the relentless loss of cognition for, at most, two years. It is therefore incumbent on each and every one of us to immediately implement all recognized strategies to preserve our cognition while we still possess the minds to learn and adapt all the known natural defenses against dementia.

This book provides proven natural healthy lifestyle strategies that not only delay dementia but may, in fact, prevent it.
