Not everyone can take a Spanish course and learn something. So, finally, after years of teaching classroom Spanish using the dreadful textbook approach, I got fed up and decided to try something different. Having picked up Spanish myself by hanging around non-English speakers, Id discovered what people really needed to speak espaol. So, with the help of my Spanish
speaking friend Cecilia, I put together a series of practical, easy-to-follow shortcuts, tips, and secrets to success designed specifically for folks who arent interested in studying a foreign language. In place of traditional units and lessons, Spanish for the Rest of Us is intended as a guidebook and offers nothing more than helpful suggestions. Spanish is a lot like English. Most Spanish words have the same Latin-based form as their English equivalents. Spanish is a lot like English. Most Spanish words have the same Latin-based form as their English equivalents.
Many words in both languages look and sound almost the same, which makes guessing a breeze. Spanish is not complicated. Conversations in Spanish can be kept short and sweet. Complex messages are often exchanged using only a few simple words. Only an understanding of basic grammar and pronunciation patterns is needed for successful communication to take place. Its okay if you blow it. Spanish speakers worldwide enjoy helping English speakers who try. Hispanics are generally proud, warm-hearted people who admire those with a sincere interest in learning their native tongue.
So cheer up. Lousy Spanish only makes you feel stupid. Spanish is not hard to practice. All around the world, the Hispanic population continues to grow at a tremendous rate. Thanks to the Internet, regular exposure to Spanish should not be a major problem. Neither should it be difficult for the learner to find someone to practice with.
