After we finished graduate school at the University of Minnesota, and had started on the tenure track, we decided to host a conference focused on mentoring academics, mostly women, studying gender and political psychology. We aimed to build a supportive network of scholars across ranks within both political science and psychology, with the goal of creating high quality scholarship through collaborative and constructive efforts. The conference would be one way, we thought, to keep female scholars, ourselves included, from leaking out of the academic pipeline. Thanks to the NSF and Program Officer Brian Humes, we received funding for that first conference (#1014854), and subsequently received additional funding from the International Society for Political Psychology (ISPP), the American Political Science Association (APSA), APSAs Women and Politics Research Section, the APSA Womens Caucus, the journal Politics, Groups, and Identities , as well as our home institutions. These funds supported two more conferences one at Northern Illinois University and another at the College of Wooster. Plans are in the works for additional conferences in the coming years.
The Gender and Political Psychology Network (GPPN) grew out of these conferences. GPPN is a community that now consists of approximately 85 scholars who actively support each other. Authors for every chapter in this volume have attended one or more of the conferences. Wed like to thank all of the people who consider themselves part of GPPN and give special thanks to the senior scholars in the network who have devoted considerable time and effort mentoring and encouraging junior scholars. Members of GPPN have become our intellectual community, our friends, and the people with whom we feel most at home in the academy.
We began our own collaboration when we started graduate school in 2001, working together on many projects ranging from the personal to the intellectual. Our most treasured projects, however, are our four children, Liam, Harrison, Naomi, and Mitchell. We dedicate this book to their futures, which we hope will be more hospitable to womens political engagement.
