In connection with the IGU Regional Conference, in Lisbon August 1998, the Commission on Dynamics of Marginal and Critical Regions met at the University of Coimbra, August 2429. Following the Commissions four year programme established in The Hague during the International Congress (1996) the theme announced for this meeting was Consequences of Globalization and Deregulation on Marginal and Critical Region Economic Systems and of the large number of contributions 20 are presented in this book Globalization and Marginality in Geographical Space book of the Spatial Aspects of Marginality-series being published by Ashgate in association with the IGU Commission on Dynamics of Marginal and Critical Regions. The three previous books of this series are: Perception of Marginality (1998), Marginality in Space Past, Present and Future (1999) and Environment and Marginality in Geographical Space (2000).
This Globalization and Marginality in Geographical Space book analyses and discusses the issue of marginalization and the effects that economic globalization have on marginal and critical regions from the point of view of politics and policies and the shift from economic to social issues of development. This book aims to give the reader an overview of the globalization issues, and yet keeping a close connection to practical examples of what, where and how globalization and deregulation effect marginal areas.
The editors would like to thank all the contributing authors for their work, and thanks are also due to the organisers of the Coimbra meeting that made this book possible. Although, there are many people we would like to mention, special thanks are due to professor Maria Andreoli (University of Pisa) and Hugo Cappella (University of Barcelona) and Joao Fernandes (University of Coimbra) who have helped us in putting things in order and also pointed out mistakes that otherwise could still have existed in this final version.
Finally the editors would like to thank Ashgate for the book series that has enabled the Commission to publish much more of its work than initially was thought.
