Acknowledgments
This book has been many years in the making. It is based on much of our work spanning the better part of two decades and assembled here into a coherent argument that urban containment planning and policies may make society better off than the status quo. Much of this book contains new and updated analysis of urban containment research we have published elsewhere. It is difficult to remember all the people who have helped us over the years assembling the urban containment research for this book, but those who come to mind especially because of their generous financial support include Bruce Katz and Amy Liu at the Brookings Institution, Joe Molinaro at the National Association of Realtors, Kris Rengert and James Carr at the Fannie Mae Foundation, Robert E. Lang at Virginia Tech and formerly at the Fannie Mae Foundation, Steve Hornburg also formerly at the Fannie Mae Foundation, Susan Wachter formerly assistant secretary for policy development and research at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and now at the University of Pennsylvanias Wharton School, and Rosalind Greenstein and Armando Carbonell at the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy. We have benefited from the insights offered us over the years especially from Raymond J. Burby at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill; Gerrit J. Knaap at the University of Maryland; George Galster at Wayne State University; James G. Strathman, Kenneth J. Dueker, and Nohad A. Toulan at Portland State University; Charles Connerly and Timothy S. Chapin at Florida State University; Douglas R. Porter; Fritz W. Wagner formerly of the University of New Orleans and now at the University of Washington; David S. Sawicki and Steven P. French at the Georgia Institute of Technology; and many others to whom we apologize for not including here. Numerous graduate students have helped us over the years, but two deserve such special mention that we have added them to the by-lines of two chapters: Sophie Cantell Lambert (). We have also been blessed with important staff support over the years especially the late Jeann H. Greenway at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Special acknowledgment is due also to Kelly Beavers, Myriam Lechuga, Kathy Litzenberg, Nicole Sitko, and Rebecca Sohmer at Virginia Techs Alexandria Center.
