COVID-19

We have re-checked every business in this book before publication to ensure that it is still open after the COVID-19 outbreak. However, the economic and social impacts of COVID-19 will continue to be felt long after the outbreak has been contained, and many businesses, services and events referenced in this guide may experience ongoing restrictions. Some businesses may be temporarily closed, have changed their opening hours and services, or require bookings; some unfortunately could have closed permanently. We suggest you check with venues before visiting for the latest information.

Welcome to Sicily

I was immediately beguiled by the charms of Sicily. My initial experiences were in the east, exploring the daily market at Ortygia or taking a food-inspired road trip around beautiful Baroque towns. Later the hill towns of Sicilys rugged interior became my focus, with elevated views from Enna and the astounding Roman mosaics at Villa Romana del Casale. To the north and west along the Tyrrhenian Coast, the beaches around Cefal were a relaxed counterpoint to the fascinating history of Palermo.

AT THE CROSSROADS OF HISTORY

Seductively beautiful and perfectly placed in the heart of the Mediterranean, Sicily has been luring passersby since the time of legends. The land of the Cyclops has been praised by poets from Homer to Virgil and prized by many ancient cultures, whose influences can still be seen around the island.

Negotiate the labyrinth of ancient island of Ortygia or the sprawling archaeological park north of town. Discover Greek ruins in an ancient pool, or wander through a square where centuries-old temple columns peek out from under a cathedrals baroque facade.
