This is especially important in the case of drugs that are new or seldom used.

The psychosocial effects of chronic illness on individuals and their families are established concepts; however, there is always new science to be added to what we know. This text, the Eleventh Edition , is no exception. Although this new edition still contains many well-researched concepts such as the illness experience and social isolation (both of which have been redefined during the COVID-19 pandemic), adherence, family caregiving, and client and family education, there are new chapters in this edition, as well as new authors taking a different slant on the concepts. New chapters for the Eleventh Edition include those on coping, social support, primary care, community care, and post-acute care.
Past editions of this text have always included a chapter on psychosocial adjustment. This overall umbrella topic has stood the test of time. Coping, however, is seen as the major factor in adjustment and as such has replaced the previous psychosocial adjustment chapter. Another new chapter, Community Care, looks at the system interventions of home health care, health promotion, and community health. Although some information about Social Support was previously included in the social isolation chapter, it was long overdue for its own chapter. The Primary Care chapter grew from the previous editions chapter on the advanced practice nurses (APN) role in chronic illness. Primary care is the setting of care for many clients with chronic illness, whether being cared for by an APN or an RN. The Post-Acute Care chapter combines previous concepts from rehabilitation and long-term care and adds new concepts as care options continue to increase for those with chronic illness. Other chapters in this edition, including those on powerlessness and spirituality, demonstrate different approaches to the subject from new authors.
