An excellent book that demonstrates that its our thoughts, not our body, that determine how much peace of mind we experience in life. ---Gerald G. Jampolsky, M.D. Though seldom visible, chronic illness remains a constant presence in the consciousness of those who live with it. This inspiring book probes the psychological and emotional realities of living with chronic illness. Based on the authors experience with Carolis disease and interviews with people who live with diseases such as multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, diabetes, and asthma, this book reveals how people faced with chronic illness can achieve meaningful lives. Tracing the impact of such illness on emotional health, self-image, relationships, work habits, and aspirations, this book also offers a penetrating look at the etiquette of chronic illness, stigmatization, the good patient, and parenthood with limitations. According to Cheri Register, the chronic illness experience tells us a great deal about the basic human need to give life meaning--and as her book eloquently demonstrates, happiness and fulfillment are not the exclusive preserves of the healthy. Cheri Register received her B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Chicago. A writer and speaker, she lives in Minneapolis with her two daughters.

I found your book to be the best in frankly dealing with the many issues confronting someone with a chronic illness.

Thanks for writing such a supportive, encouraging book that flow's without getting dragged down in frustrated feelings. It's about coping and moving beyond your problems while dealing with them.

You have comforted me more than anyone else in my life. Now, I never feel so isolated and alone thanks to you and your "characters."

Even though I've read other books on chronic illness, yours is the only one that really gets to how it feels to be stuck in a malfunctioning body. On every page I saw my life.
Theo, Oregon

After fifteen years of living with rheumatoid arthritis, my feelings have finally been validated. You have given me back a part of my self.
Karla, Texas
Picture 7
I have had rheumatoid arthritis for thirty-five years and discovering your book was like having a support group anytime I wanted. I have a collection of such books, but none can touch the quality of yours no easy answers or "shoulds," just much understanding and companionship. I dip into it often, at random, and laugh and cry and nod my head and somehow am energized once more.
Margarita, Missouri

You were able to put into words feelings I have had for years and was unable to express. I will forever be grateful for this. Thank you for helping me to adjust and accept my disease.

As I began reading with a sense of detachment, distant from the text, I soon discovered that it was speaking to my own personal experiences in very intimate ways. It speaks to the fears, hopes, and questions of "who I am," "what should I do/not do," that are common to all of us.
Dolores, Minnesota

Your openness to the problems faced by chronically ill persons is to be treasured.
Mark, Ohio

I've avoided "illness books" for years. By chance, I opened your book and read the same evasions I use to pass as healthy. I was hooked.
Rachel, New York
Picture 12
Never have I read anything as concise and insightful as your writing. I especially appreciate your open-ended approach. Too many books like yours try to answer questions where there are no answers, or glorify illness as an exalted state. Thank you for writing such a thoughtful and probing book.
Joan, California

You have not only touched me deeply but have put into words what I believe is one of the most important perspectives on life. Your ability to allow your pain and suffering to transform into insight and wisdom about the human condition has been a gift to me and all your readers.
David, Connecticut

I just finished reading your book. I feel as if I had eaten my first home-cooked meal after subsisting on snack food on a long, long journey.
