In the fall of 1995, Dr. Saray Stancic was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. By 2003, she walked regularly with a cane, had given up virtually all unnecessary physical activity, and was on numerous medications, all with horrible side effects. After stumbling upon some studies that linked MS outcomes to diet and lifestyle, Dr. Stancic undertook a radically different approach to managing her illness. Within a relatively short time period she was off all MS medications, walking normally, resumed dancing, and in 2010 she ran a marathon!Today she lives an active, symptom free life, and takes no medications for multiple sclerosis. Now, in Whats Missing from Medicine: Six Lifestyle Changes to Overcome Chronic Illness, Dr. Stancic shares her own inspiring story and explains the incredible power that specific lifestyle changes can have for those living with chronic illness. Her prescription to prevent, treat, and even reverse chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity, autoimmune diseases like lupus, multiple sclerosis, and many others, is what readers will find in this book.Dr. Stancic is also highly critical of the medical communitys lack of success when it comes to treating chronic illness, and thats why Whats Missing from Medicine is both a prescription for a better life for each of us, as well as a clarion call for the medical establishment to make these lifestyle changes an integral part of the practice of medicine.

Foreword
It's my pleasure to write this foreword to Dr. Saray Stancic's extraordinary book.
This is the era of lifestyle medicine: that is, using simple yet powerful lifestyle changes to reverse the progression of many of the most common chronic diseases as well as to help prevent these.
Lifestyle medicine is the most exciting movement today in health and healinga revolutionary tidal wave that hasn't yet even begun to crest.
For more than four decades, I have directed a series of randomized controlled trials and demonstration projects proving, for the first time, that lifestyle medicine can often help prevent and even reverse the progression of the most common chronic diseases. It can be undertaken in combination with drugs and surgery, or sometimes as an alternative to these.
And the only side effects are good ones!
These lifestyle changes include:
  • A whole foods, plant-based diet (naturally low in fat and refined carbohydrates)
  • Stress management techniques (including meditation)
  • Moderate exercise (such as walking)
  • Social support and community (love and intimacy)
In short: eat well, stress less, move more, love more. That's it.
My colleagues and I continue to be amazed and inspired that the more diseases we study and the more underlying biological mechanisms we research, the more new reasons and scientific evidence we have to explain why these simple lifestyle changes are so powerful, how trans-formative and far-ranging their effects can be, and how quickly people can show significant and measurable improvementsoften in just a few weeks or even less.
In our research, we use the latest high-tech, state-of-the-art scientific measures to prove the power of simple, low-cost and low-tech lifestyle interventions. Our studies have been published in the leading peer-reviewed medical and scientific journals and presented at the most well-respected physician conferences.
Our research is proving that many of the most common and debilitating chronic diseases and even much of the damages of aging at a cellular level may often be slowed, stopped, or possibly even reversed by this lifestyle medicine program. These include:
  • Reversing even severe coronary heart disease
  • Reversing type 2 diabetes
  • Reversing early-stage prostate cancer
  • Reversing high blood pressure
  • Reversing elevated cholesterol levels
  • Reversing obesity
  • Reversing some types of early-stage dementia
  • Reversing some autoimmune conditions, including arthritis
  • Reversing emotional depression and anxiety
To this list we may now be able to add Dr. Saray Stancic's experience using lifestyle medicine to reverse the progression of multiple sclerosis. While this is an n of 1 study, not a randomized controlled trial, she shares in this book a powerful story of her healing journey.
Why is it that these same lifestyle changes may help prevent and even reverse the progression of such a wide range of chronic diseases?
Like most physicians, I was trained to view heart disease, diabetes, prostate cancer, and other chronic illnesses as being fundamentally different from each other. Different diagnoses, different diseases, different treatments.
But they're really not as different as they seem because they share many common origins and pathways.
We found that the same lifestyle changes described in this book can often reverse and thus help prevent the progression of a wide variety of the most common, costly, and disabling chronic diseases. Also, the more closely people adhered to this program, the more they improved in virtually every way we measured and the better they feltat any age! These findings are giving many people new hope and new choices.
Why is this true?
The reason these same lifestyle changes are beneficial in so many chronic diseases is that they each affect and share so many common underlying biological causes, mechanisms, and pathways.
One of the important implications of this new unifying theory is to stop seeing chronic diseases as being fundamentally different from each other and to begin viewing them as diverse manifestations and expressions of similar underlying mechanisms, all of which are powerfully affected by the lifestyle choices we make every dayfor better and for worse. (I describe this new unifying theory in more detail in our book, UnDo It! )
In other words, in many respects these are the same disease manifesting and masquerading in different forms. That is why the effects of lifestyle changes are not disease-specificbecause they affect all of these mechanisms.
