The Sociology of Knowledge in a Time of Crisis
The speed of social dynamics has overtaken the speed of thought. Adopting a dialectical perspective toward reality, social theory has always detected faults in the dominant social pattern, foreseeing crises and outlining in advance the features of new social models. Thought has always moved faster than reality and its ruling models, ensuring a dynamic equilibrium during modernity. Despite any dramatic social crisis, theory has always provided exit routes. The tragedy of the current crisis lies in the fact that its social implications are exasperated by the absence of alternative views. This book identifies the causes of this mismatch between thought and reality, and illustrates a way out.
Onofrio Romano is Professor of Sociology at the Department of Political Sciences of the University of Bari.

The impudent theoretical (and political) ambition contained in this book has engendered in its author a certain feeling of shame. It is probably for this reason that, unlike my previous works, I have chosendont know how consciouslyto disguise myself behind the use of a foreign language and, above all, to feed this ambition all alone. It follows that the customary self-accountability formula that punctually recurs in pages like these (after the dissemination of acknowledgments for the assistance received from colleagues, friends, and kin) has to be taken more seriously than ever. In short, I acknowledge that I havent looked for many opportunities to discuss the theses that follow. So the persons around me, those that normally heel my work, can be totally cleared of any responsibility for all the blunders contained in this book.
