Preface
In the last millennium, only Professors/Academics had access to the resources needed to publish a book. There was a very real disconnect at the time between the professorial authors and the exam-taking readership. So over 30 years after the novel idea of an abundantly illustrated equipment book, written by junior doctors who understood what the FRCA exam wanted them to know, here we are again.
This sixth edition holds true to the original format and philosophy of the trail blazing first edition: syllabus focused text, great illustration, and helpful questions, plus web links.
Ironically one of the authors was a Professor before retiring, but I trust the readers will not hold that against us!
We have maintained the high standards that have made this the equipment book of choice not only for trainees in Anaesthesia, but also for our Operating Department Practitioner and Nursing colleagues. We have extensively updated the text, images and illustrations.
Simplicity, Structure, Syllabus.

Chapter 1: Medical gas supply
Gas supply
Medical gas supply takes the form of cylinders and/or a piped gas system, depending on the requirements of the hospital.
Cylinders
Components
  • 1. Cylinders are made of thin-walled, seamless molybdenum steel in which gases and vapours are stored under pressure. They are designed to withstand considerable internal pressure.
  • 2. The top end of the cylinder, the neck, ends in a tapered screw thread into which the valve is fitted. The thread is sealed with a material that melts if the cylinder is exposed to intense heat. This allows the gas to escape, thus reducing the risk of an explosion.
