In Memoriam
Courtesy of Dr. James Stephens
Dr. James Stephens, FACHE, coauthor for the third edition of this textbook, passed away in February 2021 at the age of 73. Dr. Stephens held senior executive positions in large medical centers and health systems for more than 25 years beginning with his first chief executive officer position at the age of 28. He transitioned to academia and excelled in teaching the next generation of health executives in both masters and doctoral degree programs after his stellar practitioner career. Dr. Stephens held faculty positions at Butler University, University of Indianapolis, Ohio University, and University of Kentucky, with his final faculty post at Georgia Southern University. His legacy lives on with this fourth edition through case studies corresponding with chapter content. The case studies are real-life examples from his professional experience as a health executive and leader in the industry. James was a husband, father, and grandfather as well as a friend and colleague to many health professionals and academicians and those in the communities in which he lived and served as a multiple Paul Harris Fellow.
James, you will be remembered and missed. I will miss your hospitality, especially at Super Bowl parties in your home, your stories, and your much sought-after wisdom. Rest in our Savior, my friend.

Preface
The purpose of this text is to provide you with a foundation not only for the study of leadership practice and theory but also for the broader concept of leading people and health organizations across multiple and interconnected disciplines. A second goal is to bridge theory and the abstract concepts of leadership with the practical or concrete operational behaviors and action of leaders. This goal is integrated with the discussion of the popular evidence-based leadership of today. We meet these goals by utilizing a four-tier strategy that walks students, early careerists, and practicing health leaders through the foundations of leadership, leadership principles and practices, and the complexity of leadership in health care and finally into the world of leading people and managing resources into the future.
