PREFACE
Over 60 million youth (ages 617 years) participate in some form of organized sports in the United States and over 28 million participate in a team sport (McKay, Cumming, & Blake, 2019). There are many benefits to sports participation, including improved physical health, better behavior, higher self-esteem, stronger peer and familial relationships, and improved attendance and academic performance. However, injury is a natural concern because sport injuries are the second leading cause of emergency department visits for children and adolescents. Therefore, governing bodies of school and youth recreational sports need to focus on the prevention, care, and management of injuries related to physical activity, and this requires a team approach with a variety of professionals. This team includes medical providers as well as coaches, administrators, personal trainers, and parents. Medical providers may not always be present at all practices and competitions, so coaches and others need to be trained and informed regarding initial injury care because they may be the first responders to a sport injury. There are many qualified medical providers who can serve within the medical portion of the team; however, Board of Certification (BOC)certified athletic trainers (ATs) play a vital role because they are most often present for the continuum of a sport injury, including prevention, recognition, immediate care, management, treatment, and rehabilitation. Collaboration from team members is the key for success, and it begins with education and understanding.
