This is especially important in the case of drugs that are new or seldom used.

Preface
The invasive cardiovascular laboratory (ICVL) is a fast-paced, continually evolving medical area. Seemingly routine procedures can rapidly become emergency situations, and an institutions scheduling can push its staff to their limits more often than they find comfortable. New devices and treatments are always being developed, research projects are carried out, and new staff and new operators need to be taught how to work efficiently in the system. An ICVL is rarely boring.
For a novice it can be overwhelming. Cath lab personnel are expected to be knowledgeable and proficient in hundreds of different procedures, from routine diagnostics to lifesaving interventional therapies. Most of the equipment used in the ICVL is not encountered anywhere else in the hospital, so the novice has to learn what each device is used for, how it works with other devices, how to prepare it, and how to use and dispose of it correctly. There is a lot of knowledge to assimilate and many new skills to develop. Although it may take a few months to learn the basics of the most common procedures, it often takes years for a cath lab novice to feel comfortable and be competent with all aspects of working in an ICVL.
