This book is dedicated to all the people who never let me give up. They believe in me, I think, more than I believe in myself. They love me unconditionally and are there to pick me up when I feel like I cant go on. Carolyn Scoville, my grandmother; Chip McFadin, the love of my life; Missy Brumley and Mayolo Gonzalez, the best cheerleaders ever; Jeff Stephens, without whom this book would not exist. I love you all and am blessed to have and have had you in my life.

what is beauty?

What is true beauty? This can be a hard question to answer, because beauty truly is in the eyes of the beholder, and everyones truth can be and probably is different.

I could start by making a list of the women I feel have inspired my ideal of beauty. First are the ever-so-expected ones, like Audrey Hepburn, with her polished elegance (especially in Breakfast at Tiffanys and Funny Face), and Marilyn Monroe, with her sexy vulnerability. (When she appeared on the screen, you couldnt help but look at her; in How to Marry a Millionaire, for exampleI dare you not to look!) And lets not leave out Elizabeth Taylor, with her strength, beauty, and presence. (I will never forget the first time I saw Giant on the big screen; the minute she appeared, she took my breath away.)

But interestingly enough, my strongest beauty influence, as far as famous actresses go, is Barbra Streisand (watch her in Funny Girlshe is absolutely mesmerizing). Her awkward beauty and confidence is breathtaking. I look at what I consider to be beauty perfection today, and I can see her influence: a dark, defined eye with shadow that elongates up and out, a softly flushed coral cheek, and a soft, subtle, slightly nude (but not bare) mouth.

embrace your own personal beautylove who you are today and everyday.

I could also go down the (probably boring for most) list of iconic models that greatly influenced me. The first was Jean Shrimpton. Even today, when I see a photo of her, I am blown away by her beauty and presence (those brows, that mouth, her strong square jaw). Kim Alexis is a perfect example of what the 80s was all about; her looks demand your attention. And then theres the classic beauty of Christy Turlington (gorgeous but still approachable).

I wonder what my appreciation of these women says about my ideal of beauty. Am I too concerned with the superficial, exterior aspect of beauty? This brings me back to the original question: What is true beauty? As I think about this, I have to say that the person most on my mind is my grandmother.

beauty from the inside out

My grandmother was not a perfect beautyby societys standards, at leastyet she had a presence: She commanded your attention when she walked into a room. Glamorous in her own quirky waybrows too dark, lipstick too frostyshe never left the house without her makeup. She was strong, loving, loyal, predictable. I know those must sound like strange adjectives to use to describe true beauty, but for me, they do. I am flooded by thoughts of all the strong, loving women in my life, and as I think of them, I know that real beauty is having the ability to love unconditionally. I believe that real women are the definition of true beauty: loving, caring, sharing, and being there for those they love.

In working on this book, I shared with my friend, Sandra, my panic about starting the project. She sent me a few thoughts that she felt would help bring my ideas about beauty into sharper focus. Id like to share them with you, too.

It is widely believed that most people are obsessed with outward beauty, to the degree that they ignore their inner beauty, Sandra wrote. They focus on what they look like versus who they are. However, it is possible that the outward expression of someones beauty is actually a desire to express her inner self.

Every time I talk with you, I am struck with your genuine desire to get to know people. Is it possible that you are searching for their inner beauty... their kindness... so that you can most effectively express it? You always take the time to make models feel comfortable; you draw them out, you allow them to feel OK about expressing their vulnerabilities. In essence, your artistry is not just an outward persona of beauty but instead an authentic expression of the beauty, kindness, or charm you discover in people.
