About the Authors

Kakoma Luneta (editor) is the Head of the Department of Childhood Education and a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics Education at the University of Johannesburg. He is a specialist in mathematics teacher education research, professional development and mentorship. He has authored three books and published several articles in peer reviewed journals. He has taught mathematics and physics in various southern and northern African countries, the UK, and the USA.

Stanley A. Adendorff taught primary and secondary mathematics for 10 years, and has been involved in teacher education for the past 25 years. He is currently a senior lecturer in mathematics education at Cape Peninsula University of Technology. He has worked as facilitator, project leader and researcher on several intervention projects geared towards improving mathematics learning and teaching in South African schools, such as REMESA (Realistic Mathematics Education in South Africa), a joint University of the Western Cape and University of Utrecht project (19992000); intervention projects run by the University of Stellenbosch, namely, Brave Maths Mouse project (20042006) and Izibalo Zabobonke (maths for all) (20062008). Stanley co-wrote a number of papers geared towards realistic and contextual approaches to teaching school mathematics.

Pam Austin taught at primary and secondary schools for 17 years before joining the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (previously University of Port Elizabeth) where she is currently a senior lecturer and head of the Intermediate Phase programme. Over the past 12 years she has authored both Foundation Phase and Intermediate Phase mathematics textbooks. Her interest lies in promoting excellence in mathematics teaching by influencing students self-efficacy and developing knowledge, skills and values for quality mathematics education.

Johanna Sandra Fransman taught Mathematics for 16 years before she left the school and joined MCPT (Mathematics Centre for Professional Teachers) as mathematics facilitator. After four years she joined the North-West University where she is currently based as lecturer and is involved in the upgrading of Mathematics teachers qualifications. Her research interests include mathematics teaching and learning and the professional development of mathematics teachers.

Sally Hobden began her career in education as a Mathematics teacher in a secondary school. This was followed by a period of freelance work doing private Mathematics lessons for struggling students and work for NGOs. In 1992 she joined the Edgewood College of Education and began her work in teacher education. She currently works as lecturer in the School of Education at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Sally has a Bachelor of Science degree and a PhD in Mathematics Education from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Her dedication to excellent teaching was recognised by the award of Distinguished Teacher in 2007. Her particular research interest is in making mathematics accessible to all, and in mathematics teacher education.

Luckson Muganyizi Kaino taught mathematics in Tanzanian secondary and high schools before joining the Tanzania Institute of Education where he worked as a Principal Curriculum Developer. He then joined the University of Swaziland in Swaziland, Limpopo University in South Africa and the University of Botswana in Botswana before joining the University of South Africa (UNISA). Luckson teaches mathematics and technology education courses and has expertise in educational research, curriculum development and evaluation. He is currently the Coordinator of the Organisation for Social Science Research in Eastern and Southern African (OSSREA), South African Chapter. He is a graduate of the University of Salzburg in Austria with a PhD in mathematics education. He also has MSc and BSc degrees in mathematics and mathematics education from the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.

Judah P. Makonye has taught mathematics at all levels of the education spectrum; primary school, secondary school, teachers college and university. He is currently a lecturer in the Division of Mathematics Education at the University of Witwatersrands School of Education. Judahs research interests include the epistemological obstacles in the teaching and learning of mathematics. He holds a PhD in mathematics education and has published numerous journal articles.
