Introduction

Learning a new language is hard and takes a lot of work and effort. You cant deny that, and anybody who tells you something different is straight out lying.

Sure, there may be exceptions, some geniuses who can learn a new language without any problems. How I envy those people. However, normal people, like you and me, are bound to face problems when learning a new language. Some of them may even be so crushing that you give up and think youre just not made to learn new languages.

Let me tell you that this thought is completely wrong. Everybody can learn a new language, no matter how old or smart you are. If you work hard enough, you will learn it, I promise you that.

And the fact that youre reading this tells me that you havent completely given up yet.

But you reading this also tells me that youve probably faced some really devastating problems on your road to learning a new language. You feel like you have been defeated by the language itself, lost motivation and are close to giving up.

BUT, you mustnt give up!

Remember why you started. I know that you dont want to give up just jet. You picked up this book because youre trying to find a solution for all the problems you have faced. You want to be motivated again, just like in the beginning, when you started out.

Stick with this book, and I promise you that you WILL find your motivation again, you WILL learn how to tackle those problems and you WILL learn how to prevent future problems.

How can I promise that, you ask?

Thats easy: I have been learning a new language Japanese to be precise myself. And trust me, I have made a lot of mistakes along the way.

Ive made mistakes that crushed me and made me feel completely helpless. I even stopped learning for MONTHS, because I had lost motivation. I thought I was just too stupid to learn Japanese.

But one day I sat myself down and thought, there has to be a way to find my motivation again . So I took a piece of paper and wrote down every stupid mistake that I had made.

There were a lot of them. And Im sure some of your mistakes are on that list too, maybe even all of them.

Once I knew what my mistakes were, I started to look for reasons. Why did I make these mistakes?

As soon as I knew that, I started looking for a solution to every single problem. And those solutions are what Im going to present to you in this book.

You can apply them immediately after reading this book (which can be done in a day) and never make these mistakes yourself and, if youve already made them, find your motivation again.

To be honest, until I found my motivation for learning Japanese again, I had forgotten almost all of it, and at one point I even thought that Id never start again. But since figuring out my mistakes, I have learned a lot more since before I had given up. And the most important thing of all, Im having fun again. Yes, learning a language is hard, but its also a lot of fun, if you know how to do it.

Like I said, I promise that you WILL find out how to revive your dream of learning a language. And that you WILL have fun again while learning.

However, Im only giving you the solution to the problems I have faced (that you probably have also faced). But you will have to put in the work for applying these solutions yourself. I cant make you do that, but Ill tell you right now that reading this book, without applying any of its content to your life, will be a complete waste of time.

So read the book, but dont do only that, thats only half of it. I want you to LIVE it, otherwise you wont see any changes.

However, I cant force you to read this book. That is your decision completely, and I respect it. But remember the void you are in right now. That feeling of hopelessness. Like youll never learn the language that youve always wanted to know. If you dont change something soon, you really will never learn it, be it German, French, Dutch, or Japanese - like in my case.

I am here so that you may find your motivation again and refuel your fire so that youre back on track as soon as possible.

Because, lets be honest, this feeling of almost giving up sucks. And if I can spare at least one person from not learning and having this empty feeling of hopelessness for months, then Im happy and writing this book has been worth my time.

So what do you say? Do you want to read this book and change something, or do you want to make the same mistakes I did? The decision is all yours. If you decide to read this book and apply its advice, then I hope that it will meet your expectations and help you get back on track. See you in the first chapter.

- Filip Jovanovi, professional language learning mistake maker

How this book is structured

When I wrote down all the problems I faced while learning Japanese, I realized that there were five main reasons for me failing. Those reasons are the five main sections of this book.

Each section consists of several chapters, which are either solutions to the problem, or a warning against mistakes that a lot of rookies make.

So it doesnt matter if you havent even started learning yet, or started, but faced errors and are close to giving up. I believe that this book will help you either way.

Thats about it concerning the structure of this book. So without any delay, lets begin and get our hands dirty!

Section 1: You dont know where to start

This is one of the most common mistakes. Ive seen a lot of my friends make it, as well. You feel overwhelmed by the amount of work that you have to put in to learn a new language and probably dont even start or do other things instead, which Ill go over in the next few chapters.

One good friend of mine, Arber Gashi, also wanted to learn Japanese. But he gave up as soon as he saw how much work it would be. He didnt even bother trying, and I still cant convince him to start.

Who knows, maybe this book will finally make him change his mind.

1. Dont be afraid to start!

Thats one of the points that I managed without a problem. I decided to learn Japanese; two days later my books arrived and I just started. However, I did make one mistake that was destined to crush me later on, but Ill tell you about that mistake in the third chapter.

This chapter is about being afraid to start, like my friend Arber (Hi Gashi!). There are several reasons for that, and Ill start with one language learning myth that I too believed for a long time:

The older you get, the harder it is to learn a new language, right? Let me tell you right now, this myth is complete nonsense. I dont know about you, but when I was younger I heard this sentence a lot:

Kids have it easier when it comes to learning a new language, so you should try learning one.

As a kid I thought: I already know German and Serbian, why do I need more? Of course, back then I didnt think about ever writing a book in English, but here I am now.

But one day, when I was about 17 years old, I decided to learn Japanese and do you know what? It went fine. The first few months were incredible, before making all those mistakes.

I felt confident in my Japanese skills after just a little bit over a month. It took me years to be able to somewhat phrase a sentence in English, even though I started learning when I was eight years old.
