Khmer is a fun language to learn, the problem is most learning materials are costly and make language learning too complicated. They start of good but then advance too quickly. Just like those dreaded language classes in school. The result, nothing sinks in, you become overwhelmed and eventually give up.

We know learning a foreign language isnt easy, it challenges both your brain and your time. Learning new concepts and setting aside time for your learning can be difficult. And if youre studying with bad material you can end up getting stuck more than necessary, which isnt fun.

Most students feel to start learning a language you simply need to start. Thats true but its better to first find the right resources to help you progress smoothly. Otherwise it can be a real motivation killer.

If these are problems youve faced, dont worry were here for you. The days of difficult learning are long gone!

Weve created this book which aims to make language learning simple. We teach you language patterns and grammar structures which can be used to form your own sentences. Instead of set phrases, which arent very practical.

No more complex learning! We keep it simple topic to topic and help you progress through Khmer smoothly. Starting with greetings, moving to introductions, small talk and then conversations. From the very beginning youll be learning how to speak Khmer. And before you know it youll be speaking like a boss!

In this book you will discover:

Simple and smooth approach to Khmer with topics that slowly build on each other. You wont need another grammar book after youve begun reading this one!

Learn how to form your own sentences instead of just set phrases, allowing you to have longer more fun conversations.

Essential vocabulary section with some of the most common words in Khmer. Youll definitely find this useful!

Totally written in romanji (English characters) , we leave the reading and writing of Khmer behind and solely focus on getting you to a conversational speaking level.

Even if youve struggled to learn Khmer for years and years, this book gives you the missing piece you need towards your fluency journey.

Learning Khmer Hello and welcome to your Khmer language learning journey! I hope you are as excited as us to be learning Khmer. In this series we will cover the fundamentals of Khmer language. Starting with basic greeting and moving towards more advanced topics. But dont worry, well walk alongside you so dont get confused. There is nothing worse than being taught a new language only to be constantly stuck and confused.

Unlike other language books we dont plan on teaching you countless phrases. Instead we aim to teach you how to form your own sentences by teaching sentence structure and language patterns. Weve found this way of learning allows students to pick up a language much quicker, which is what we want! One thing we do recommend is to read this content sequentially and do not skip over any sections. We have designed the section to build on top of each other, theres no rush! So take your time to fully understand each section before moving on. At the end of each section there will be a short homework to complete. Follow these steps and you will be speaking Khmer in no time.

And by the end of this series you will be able to communicate with people in Khmer on a conversational level. Trust me you will be amazed at your results. Lets get started ...

The Basics
Picture 5
L ets begin with some basics, the first thing you will need to know in any language is how to greet people:
Picture 6
H ello/Hi: Sour Sdey How do you do: Chumreab sour How are you: Ter nak sok sabay te? I am fine: Sok sabay I am not fine: Ot sok sabay te Yes: Cha (for women) Yes: Bat (for men) Thank you Orkun And you Chos nak venh The same Doj knea
Picture 7
T hese are phrases that you will commonly hear when in Cambodia. Now lets put these phrases together to run through a simple greeting in Khmer. Bora : Soursdey Nari (Hi Nari) Nari: Soursdey Bora (Hi Bora) Bora: Ter nak sok sabay te? (How are you?) Nari: Sok sabay.

Chos nak venh? (I am fine, and you?) Bora : Doj knea, Orkun. (The same, thank you.) Simple enough so far right? Do not worry is you dont know any of the vocabulary listed, this will be covered in more detail later.

Picture 8
H ow to Introduce Yourself Now lets take it a step further and go into introductions, In order to introduce yourself we use the following phrase: My name is ... = khnhom chmos ... To ask someones name = Ter nak chmous avey? Next to ask what occupation someone is in we use the following phrase:
Picture 9
To ask someones occupation = Ter nak tveu kar avey?
Picture 10
I am ... (occupation) = khnhom keu chea ...

F inally to ask someones age we use the following phrase: To ask someones age = ter nak ayu bonman?

Picture 11
I am (number) age = khnhom ayu + number + chnam E xample My name is Philip = knhom chmos Philip. I am a student = khnhom keu chea niset/sers. (university student = niset, student = sers) I am 18 year old = khnhom ayu 18 chnam. Homework Using the sentences that you have learned try to make a small conversation introducing yourself. Simply, say hi, how are you, my name is, I am... etc.

If you do not have anyone to roleplay with, you can simply practice in the mirror. Thats it for the first topic. Take 1 - 2 days to practice these phrases until you can remember them before going to the next section.

Picture 14
Pronouns & Possessive Pronouns
Picture 15
L ets move onto covering pronouns: I = Khnhom You = Nak She = Neang He = Kuart We = Yeung They = Pouk ke It = Vea
Picture 16
P ossessive pronouns To form a possessive pronoun in Khmer, we simply place the word robos in front of each pronoun. Robos + Pronoun Examples: My = Robos khnhom Your = Robos nak Her = Robos neang His = Robos kuart Our = Robos yeung Their = Robos pouk ke Its = Robos vea
Picture 17
H ow to use possessive pronouns One of the main things to remember when using possessive pronouns is their placement in the sentence. In English possessive pronouns stand before the noun.

In Khmer the noun stands before the possessive pronoun. Its like saying that something belong to someone. Have a look at the examples below to further understand. Language Pattern Noun + Possessive Pronoun Examples English Khmer Translation Your pen = Pen your (noun + possessive pronoun) Your cat = Cat your (noun + possessive pronoun) Our book = Book our (noun + possessive pronoun) Now lets have a look with the Khmer translations Your pen = Bich robos khnhom (Pen your) (noun + possessive pronoun) (pen = bich) Your cat = Chmar robos nak (Cat your) (noun + possessive pronoun) (cat = chmar) Our book = Seavpov robos yeung (Book our) (noun + possessive pronoun) (book = seavpov) In casual spoken Khmer, the word robos is usually dropped . My pen Bich robos khnhom. (Pen my) Bich khnhom.

Your cat Chmar robos nak (Cat your) Chmar nak
