Joan of Arc: The Early Debate: summary, description and annotation

Joan of Arc arrived at the French court claiming to be sent by God to come to the aid of the dauphin Charles. Most studies of Joan focus on her political expediency, but the starting point of this book is her assertion that she was sent by God: it is the first real exploration of the application of the Catholic doctrine of discretio spirituum(the discernment of spirits) to her case, and of her reception as a visionary woman. The author examines contemporary theological documents which show genuine debate about Joans mission and whether she was diabolically or divinely inspired, also taking into account the two major literary works dealing with her, Christine de Pizans Ditie de Jehanne dArc and Martin Le Francs Le champion des dames, as well as Joans own letter to the English. Appendices offer translations of pertinent Latin and French texts. Professor DEBORAH FRAIOLI teaches inthe Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at Simmons College, Boston.

Preface
A major hurdle was overcome in the writing of this book when I realized that simplicity needed to be the order of the day. In essence, I had been trying to write a second book on a subject for which there was no first book. I planned to reread as theological debate a number of texts that, with the exception of Christine de Pizan's Diti de Jehanne d'Arc, had scarcely sustained any critical reading at all, at least to anglophone audiences. Not only was there little critical literature, but in some cases there was neither an authoritative edition nor an English translation.
In the final stages of writing, therefore, I have been guided by two principles, neither of which was among my initial intentions: to introduce each text in some detail, taking little for granted, and to offer primarily the conclusions of my research at each stage in the discussion, in as succinct a manner as possible. This is not to suggest, by any means, that I feel unconditionally wedded to the ideas expressed here. I am well aware that the discovery of even a single neglected manuscript of any one of these texts could require a reshuffling of the entire picture.
