About the Author
Stephanie Pui-Mun Law has been painting fantastic otherworlds from early childhood, though her art career did not begin until 1998 when she graduated from a program of Computer Science. After three years of programming for a soft ware company by day and rushing home to paint into the midnight hours, she left the world of typed logic and numbers for the painted worlds of dreams and the fae.
Her illustrations have been used for various game and publishing clients, including Wizards of the Coast, HarperCollins, LUNA Books, Tachyon Books, White Wolf, Alderac Entertainment, and Green Ronin. She has authored and illustrated Dreamscapes, Creating Magical Angel, Faery & Mermaid Worlds with Watercolor (2008, IMPACT Books), a book on watercolor technique for fantasy. She is also the creator of the Shadowscapes Tarot deck (Llewellyn Publishing).
In addition to the commissioned projects, she has spent a great deal of time working up a personal body of work whose inspiration stems from mythology, legend and folklore. She has also been greatly influenced by the art of the Impressionists, Pre-Raphaelites, Surrealists and the master hand of Nature. Swirling echoes of sinuous oak branches, watermarked leaf stains and the endless palette of the skies are her signature. Her background of over a decade as a flamenco dancer is also evident in the movement and composition of her paintings. Every aspect of her paintings moves in a choreographed flow, and the dancers are not only those with human limbs. What Stephanie tries to convey with her art is not simply fantasy, but the fantastic, the sense of wonder, that which is sacred.
While most of Stephanie's work is done with watercolors, she experiments with pen & ink, intaglio printing, acrylic and digital painting as well.

Thanks to Dana for always being patient with my moods when my head is buried in the I'm working! mode, while frantically typing away before the current idea evaporates; and for the impartial voice to talk some sense into me when I've been working sixteen hours straight on a painting and green and purple all blend together into one muddy mess in my head! Thanks to both Moms for being so supportive with the two of you I've got publicity covered for both the East and West coasts!
Introduction
Much of the fantasy genre is built upon a grand history of archetypal imagery. Tolkien understood this when he wrote his Lord of the Rings, drawing much of his inspiration from ancient tales that spanned across the mythologies of European cultures. He reinterpreted the lost bits of folklore and tales into his own Middle Earth.
Tolkien was not the first nor only one to draw from the vast array of mythos for his fantasy world. Shakesp eare took the king and queen of faery, Oberon and Titania, into his Midsummer Night's Dream, and wove his play around that bright thread. Acknowledging the importance of such figures to the subconscious workings of the human mind, a tarot deck's twenty-two trump cards wend a path through a cast of archetypal characters: Emperor, Empress, Death and the celestial bodies of Sun and Moon and Stars.
Even into our modern popular culture, unicorns and dragons are commonplace on T-shirts and posters, kitsune run rampant through Japanese manga and anime, and tanuki even peek their wide eyes from video games like Super Mario Bros.
What are the origins of these images? Why does the Snow Queen in Hans Christian Andersen's story evoke chills that go beyond her introduction from his tale? Is it because there are a long line of witches before her, who provide a backdrop for our understanding of that type of character? Thomas the Rhymer is a bard in good company with Taliesin, Orpheus and Diarmuid. Even a simple tree can have impact across the world and across the divide of cultures for its significance in religions, stories, and mythologies.
A great deal of fantasy has evolved from the traditions of what was once word of mouth folklore, and much of what modern writers and artists depict follow in the footsteps of tales and images that are much more ancient. This book will be an exploration of some of those ancient origins. Come sit at this fireside that has burned from the first brand and spark of life and knowledge, listen to some tales, and let mind and hand bring them to life. Then, perhaps, you'll come and share your own tales the ones that have grown from the seedlings of the old.
