Writing a book is an arduous process. It is highlighted, of course, by the exciting research and writing portion where the author sits in front of a computer with a cup of coffee and cries.
Im joking. We only cry sometimes.
There are people who make the process easier. In my case, its my family that (occasionally) gives me the time to sit in front of my computer without a toddler in my lap. I cant say the same about the family cat. Gary, youre a detriment to the creative process. There. I said it.
Id like to thank the wonderful people Ive worked with at Llewellyn Worldwide, Amy Glaser and Holly Vanderhaar, without whom you wouldnt be reading these words.
Id like to thank Ben Grundy and Aaron Wright at Mysterious Universe who gave me the forum to share my original monster stories. Check out all the great content at mysteriousuniverse.org. Seriously. And dont forget to listen to the MU podcast. Its amazing.
And lastly, a shout-out to podcaster Tim Binnall, who not only has been gracious enough have me appear on his show Binnall of America Audio multiple times, he once challenged me to use his name in all my books, hence making him a permanent fixture in the Offuttverse. Heres mention number one, Tim. Youre welcome.
For my mother,
who suffered silently through a young Jason Offutts monster fascination. I never outgrew it, Mom. Sorry about the Bigfoot thing.

Foreword
When Jason Offutt asked me if I would be interested in writing the foreword for his new book, I immediately said Yes! I have followed Jasons work for more than a few years and it has always proved to be captivating and intriguingand written in an entertaining and atmospheric style. Jasons new book is no different. So, with that said, what will you discover in the pages of Chasing American Monsters ? A more accurate question might be: what wont you discover? Ill tell you: not much!
Jasons new book is packed with tales that range from the creepy to the spine-tingling, and from the bizarre to the amazing. Of course, it helps when the writer has a flair for keeping his audience entranced, which is exactly what Jason does. In less capable hands, a state-by-state study of the monsters of America might come across as tedious and repetitiveand quickly, too. Fortunately, you can dispel all such thoughts from your mind.
From page one onward, Chasing American Monsters is guaranteed to grab you (by the claws and jaws, of course). As for the contents, what we have here is a book that addresses matters relative to the field of cryptozoology (the study of unknown animals, such as Bigfoot and the Yeti), the domain of the supernatural, and the world of monster-huntingand blends them all into a fascinating story of incredible proportions.
Tales of rampaging werewolves comfortably sit next to wild accounts of long-necked lake monsters. Stories of living, mighty mammoths; of ferocious, winged humanoids; of creepy, evil gnomes; and of savage Wildmen of the woods, will make you ponder on just how much we know (or dont know) about the United States and what really lurks in its forests, rivers, lakes, woods, and caves.
