If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

The fabled King Ranch of South Texas was renowned for its breed of horses, the King Ranch Quarter Horses. Here is the complete story of the ranch and its horses, how they were bred, and what they have achieved. We meet the Old Sorrel, the horse without a name who became the foundation stallion of the ranch Quarter Horses. The King Ranch produced winning show horses (Hired Hand, Anita Chica, Peppy) and race horses (Miss Princess, Nobodys Friend) and, above all, top-quality cow horses famed for their levelheadedness and ability to work in close partnership with their riders. Today they and their descendants are working cattle and winning competitions worldwide. For those who love Quarter Horses, and especially for those who own a Quarter Horse descended from the King Ranch and wish to know its history, this book will be a treasured volume.

"I feel that our effort with the Quarter Horse is a very important one, and if we possibly can, we should keep the thing alive. In my mind, Quarter Horses are just as important on the ranch as the hardy strains that we have developed from the Brahman cattle. The Quarter Horse should be on every ranch. I think that one thing we should stress more about these horses is the fact that they are the hardiest of all strains of horses under range conditions."
Robert J. Kleberg, Jr.(Letter to the author, October 6, 1942)

FOREWORD
IT has been in my mind to make this book somewhat less than a history of the King Ranch but considerably more than just the story of a great horse. To paraphrase my old friend "Pancho" Dobie, I shall sometimes be riding alongside the Klebergs and sometimes picking my way afoot, tracking down some horse that came from outside the confines of the ranch. One soon finds that the motivating force behind the formation of the King Ranch Quarter Horses was one man, Robert J. Kleberg, Jr.
This then is a story of horses and people. Not all horses or all people, but some very special ones. The characters in the story are divided between those native to the Santa Gertrudis and the inquilines who crossed the fence and took root. The Klebergs and the mare Brisa are examples of those bred on the ranch. Dr. J. K. Northway and the Old Sorrel are individuals who came to the ranch and found a permanent home. I hope to show how these individuals, human and equine, interreacted and how the hand of Bob Kleberg guided the action.
Texas cowmen do not suffer from an inferiority complex, nor are they uncertain in action. They are not and do not consider themselves laborers or grubbers in the soil. Nevertheless, few workers have ever labored harder than the men of the King Ranch.
The cattleman is basically a cavalier, in the true meaning of that word. As a man on horseback he has ever been a stirrup above the man on foot.

If America has ever had a feudal lord, it has certainly been the cattle rancher. He has governed his range principality with all the vigor of a medieval lordbut with one big difference. He has not expected his vaqueros to do any work that he could not do, whether riding, roping, cutting, or branding.
Such are the Klebergs. As the saying goes, they would charge hell with a bucket of water if it would serve the ranch.
I am beholden to many people for this book, and I am sorry that I cannot personally mention each one of them. My obligation to some is great; for example, to the entire King Ranch personnel, all of whom went out of their way to help me. The time I spent on the Norias Division of the ranch with Robert J. Kleberg, his daughter, Helenita, and Ed Durham primed the pump. I had not seen Helen since 1940, when she was a girl, and the visits we shared and the suggestions she and her father offered did much to set the pattern for the book.
Two men who gave many hours of their valuable time trying to ensure the accuracy of the account were Richard M. Kleberg and Dr. J. K. North-way. Dick Kleberg personally escorted me to different divisions of the ranch so that I could see the ranch horses at work. He never refused a request for assistance of any kind, and he saw to it that I had everything I needed. Doc Northway, the internationally known veterinarian of the ranch, put up with constant questioning and checked innumerable facts. No one could have been more helpful. He always had advice, counsel, and a storehouse filled with memories and information, all available at any hour of the day or night. We renewed a friendship that had begun almost thirty years before, and I all but became a member of the Northway family. It would be understandable if his gracious wife was relieved when the summers passed and I went on my way. The hours I spent in Doc's home and at his office, and the fishing adventures we shared at the reservoir near the veterinary barns, played an important part in making this book a joy to write.
