Preface
The Present Collection had its genesis in a chance remark to Bob Lowery, editor of the Irish Literary Supplement. Concerned that my yellowing and disintegrating newsprint pages of the ILS interviews with writers were not holding up well after years of being consulted and photocopied for use in courses, I suggested that he look into the possibility of editing and reprinting the invaluable dialogues in handy, more durable book format. Because ILS does not publish books, Bob urged me to locate a publisher for the project, to which he gave both his encouragement and blessing. By the time I succeeded in finding a possible publisher for the proposed selection of interviews, I had also become its editor, a development I had neither intended nor foreseen.
My intention to bring forth this volume involved reprinting the interviews, together with their original headnotes or lead-ins and updating the bibliographic commentary. At the same time, typographic and other errors were to be silently emended. The only real addition involved providing annotations, some updating, and clarifications, these principally for the benefit of undergraduate students (in courses involving contemporary Irish literature) who would find such commentary useful, if not indeed needful. Several individuals who saw parts of the book, however, vigorously suggested that I eliminate most of the annotations. Although I did not identify obvious names and references with which students of Irish literature should have ready acquaintance, it still appeared to some that I was footnoting the texts excessively. Accordingly, I cut back even more.
