GO EPIC!
I love the example-based approach rooted in the beautiful photographs! Dr. E transports you to each magnificent scene and shares all his settings and thoughts, while inviting you to consider your own creative compositions! It is like a workshop in a book transporting you to dozens of epic locations! -Elizabeth L.
As a professional photographer, this book has given me EPIC insights and inspiration! The beautiful photographs themselves are enough to inspire us to get out there, and Dr. Es subtle and informed insights--his philosophy of photography and friendly voice--will be a companion on future photography outings. While every professional will gain from the usually reticent Dr. Es approach laid bare herein, I would also call this book a beginners guide to advanced landscape photography. I wish I could have spent a couple hours with it when I was just learning the art and craft of landscape photography. And even now, it has given me new insights and inspiration. --L Taylor
There exist many wonderful books on landscape photography, but this one invites the reader to aim higher via EPIC Landscape Photography. Story is the soul of the work, Aristotle reminds us, and as the soul alone is immortal, we must shoot for the soul so as to create lasting art. Dr. E invites the photographer to see themselves as a participant in a greater story, as they seek to photograph the soul of the landscape so as to exalt its poetryits Epic Spirit--in art.
Sergio Leone stated that the greatest writer of Westerns was Homer, and is it no wonder then, that the landscape photography in his film The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly was most Epic? It is because he was shooting for the grand, Homeric soul, and so too shall we.
Epic: adjective: noting or pertaining to a long poetic composition, usually centered upon a hero, in which a series of great achievements or events is narrated in elevated style: Homers Iliad is an epic poem.
The book teaches far more by showing than by merely telling. Not only are detailed settings shared for over seventy of Dr. Es fine art photographs, but so are Dr. Es detailed thoughts and philosophies on getting the shot.
FROM THE BOOK:
Dont just visit Ansel Adams Wilderness and walk the John Muir Trail, but also read their epic words exalting the land as The Range of Light. Read the noble mentors words so as to better tap into the higher powers of the creative spirit, as you find a thousand thousand words and photographic compositions of your ownnot only from without, but from deep within your soul.
Ralph Waldo Emerson famously stated: As to the methods there may be a million and then some, but principles are few. The man who grasps principles can successfully select his own methods. The man who tries methods, ignoring principles, is sure to have trouble.
Yes! I will share the principles! By sharing not only the settings, but what I was thinking for each shot, I will strive to teach you the principles of photography, after which you will be able to hone your own particular methods as you develop your artistic vision and voice.
We must grasp the principles of light in this art of photo-graphy which literally means light-writing. And too, we must learn to see the world through our own personal lens, shaping and exalting the light via our own voice.
Shoot for the Soul: Prologue to an Epic Philosophy of Landscape Photography:
The key to epic landscape photography is losing oneself in the story of the land. See yourself as not just a photographer, but as the Man with No Name in a John Ford or Sergio Leone Western, riding into town as a stranger in a magnificently strange land. See yourself as an ancient Navajo sage entering Antelope Canyons sacred temples in a state of humble reverence. When shooting a seascape, become Captain Ahab pursuing the While WhaleMoby Dick. . .
See you out there in the Epic Landscape!

Caspar David Friedrich: Every truthful work of art must express a definite feeling, must move the spirit of the spectator either to joy or to sadness rather than try to unite all sensations, as though mixed together with a twirling stick.

Dr. E: Landscape photography is not just about journeying outwards into the realm of spectacular scenery, but it is every bit as much about journeying inwards into the deeper realm of the spirit and soul, if not more so.

Vincent van Gogh: When I have a terrible need of shall I say the word religion, then I go out and paint the stars.

Exalt the epic mythology of the landscape. Every location is brimming with fantastic stories, shaped and told by nature and humanity alike. The sandstone formations tell of millions of years of accretion and erosion, coupled with some master sculptors hand. Time hath maketh and time hath taketh away, and by the time we shoot the sandstone layers and sculptures at the beach, in Zion, or at the Grand Canyon, we are capturing times epic story itself.

Every land is rich in history, from the dinosaurs who left their footprints behind, to the art, tools, petroglyphs, and weapons of the earliest human inhabitants, to the decaying industrial-age, goldmining equipment erected by those who came later by different routes, oft risking it all for their unyielding dream of a better life. Every land was once a frontier, and every frontier was first reached by dreamers and explorers who oft followed the setting sun west.

Today we shoot that very same sunset, as we follow the same spirit in our fine art photography, hoping to find and photograph an epic dream away out there where fortune meets perseverance. Yes, we landscape photographers are journeymen, frontiersmen, artists, and storytellers in our own right, and thus we feel a deep kinship with every petroglyph, ancient mine shaft, and worn sandstone hoodoo. Not only have our fellow travelers walked here before, but their spirits yet walk right alongside us on this epic odyssey. And so it is that although we walk alone, we are never on our own, and we may take a quiet faith that our art may someday guide and inspire others on out towards that grander vista.

Study the history and literature of the land. Miltons epic Paradise Lost helped inspire John Muir in establishing the National Parks System, as sure as Zion, and the names of all her wonderful landmarks ranging from Angels Landing, to The Court of the Patriarchs, to The Towers of the Virgin were inspired by those same epic stories which inspired Paradise Lost s Garden of Eden. Learn the story and meaning of words such as YosemiteThose who kill. The Yosemite people were feared as rugged warriors, and their spirit can yet be seen in the rugged, towering granite of The CaptainEl Capitan.

Many of you may have noticed how the previous photographs exalt the rule of odds, or the rule of threes, and/or repeating patterns. As humans we are forever seeking order in chaos, as order and patterns have ever represented life. Nothing catches our attention more than a lone wildflower in a desert landscape (precious water!), or an old, decaying fencepost in a wild meadow, as they exalt vitality and intent, reminding us of our kinship with all that lives and dies.
