    Did You Know?

The story of Churchill, how he endured and became a hero, intrigued Erik Larson. "What drove me was an interest not so much in exploring that first year but rather in learning how Churchill and his family and inner circle actually went about surviving Germany's aerial campaign against Britain," he explained in an interview.

E rik Larson is back at it again with his latest book, The Splendid and the Vile, which his fans without a doubt anticipate. The gripping account aims to give a fresh and diverse look on Winston Churchill's first year as prime minister of the United Kingdom, a distinct angle that is yet to be found in other tales about the fearless, intelligent hero. Churchill was a British political leader, army officer, and writer. He was a leader who persevered to lead the United Kingdom to victory during World War II from 1940 to 1945 and from 1951 to 1955.

During the daytime, Germany had invaded Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. The events alarmed the already politically unstable United Kingdom; Neville Chamberlain had resigned as prime minister, and King George VI appointed Churchill as a replacement. For the next twelve months, Adolf Hitler would pursue his invasion with a ruthless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. With this, Churchill must keep the nation united and immediately form an alliance with President Franklin Roosevelt.

In The Splendid and the Vile, Larson displays how Churchill taught the British people the art of being fearless in the state of turmoil and despair. It is a story of a politician pursuing a dangerous policy with a cinematic theme set against Churchills prime-ministerial country home, Chequers. With thorough research through diaries, original archival documents, and confidential reports, some recently released, Larson provides a new lens on London's darkest year through the daily lives of Churchill and his family. There is his wife, Clementine; the youngest daughter, Mary, who finds her parent's protectiveness unpleasant; the son, Randolph, and his unhappy wife, Pamela, who takes refuge from an American emissary. The book will also display Churchill's complete reliance on his trusted advisers in his "Secret Circle." Since most historians find daily lives and family matters irrelevant in making an account of the war, and almost everyone kept journals and wrote letters, the author takes full advantage of the materials, to retell history in a whole different light.

He got the idea of writing the account when he moved to Manhattan, New York. There he thought about the tragic event the city would never forget9/11. He started thinking what would that have been like for Londoners who experienced 57 consecutive 9/11s and series of escalating raids after a period of eight months.

As he was trying to get a sense of what it was like to endure the bombing of London and Britain for 57 consecutive nights by the Germans, "And when for six months after that at larger intervals but with increasing aggression you are bombed again until essentially May 10, 1941, a period of about eight months, the thought lingered in his mind and eventually decided to begin his research.

During the research process, he found Winston Churchill. He saw how, even though early in his position, he did his utmost best to serve the United Kingdom. Countless records were explored, and great things were said about the hero, but Larson found delight in digging more of Churchill's private life. There he found out that there is more to the inspiring leader than what's mostly written about him. "I think that readers will be most surprised about the fact that Churchill was a lot of fun. He happily shared that the man had a great sense of humor, no sense of conceit, loved dancing and singing his favorite songs like 'Run, Rabbit, Run, Run, Run,'
