    Did You Know?

BJ Foggs teachings were positively taken by his students that two to three hundred people he teaches personally a week would ask, "Where's the book?" Whenever asked something like that, he would say, "Well, I don't have time." The kind of Q&A went on for years until one night, Fogg had a dream that changed his response.

T iny Habits, written by BJ Fogg, aims to discuss how human behavior works in general. The book's framework uses the Fogg Behavior Model, B=MAP, which states that behavior happens when motivation, ability, and a prompt come together simultaneously. This model is easy to digest and practice in everyday life. The author claims motivation alone is not enough to drive behavior change. A person's motivation won't always be high, and the way to get around that is to do easy practices. The Tiny Habits method came from his own model and understanding that motivation is unstable. Fogg claims when something is easy to do, motivation won't be considered a necessity anymore. The book promises no tricks and no quirks, only basic science.

Fogg explained, in reality, emotions shape habits. His research supports that once you modify yourself and feel successful about them, the way you think about yourself starts to change along with your identity. When you learn how to embrace your achievements, even the tiny ones, that transforms the way you see yourself and your opportunities.

When motivation, ability, and a prompt come together at the same moment, behavior takes place. It won't become successful if one of the elements is missing. Fogg Behavior Model applies to one-time behavior, to stopping ones, and to habits. A habit is a behavior you do that gets stuck into your brain. It gradually happens without much thought. In the book, Fogg tries to clarify that a habit is formed not through repetition but by the emotion you feel after doing the behavior. Hacking your habits, and wiring them quickly, causes yourself to feel successful as you do the behavior, and that feeling makes your brain records and creates a pattern.

Diving further in the B=MAP formula, in Motivation, a dead-end path is when you pick a behavior that feels like a necessity and try to motivate yourself to do it. Instead, choose the things you set your mind to do. Many of us have our choice set, and we're dragging from our shoulds. You must shift to your chosen set of wants because it's a vast choice set.

Ability comes in when you're matching the chosen behaviors you can do to yourself. In the Tiny Habits method, what you do is take the habit you want, and make it as small as possible. In Fogg's example, say, when you decide to read every time you sit down on the subway, that would eventually be your reading habit. Don't read a chapter; instead, read one paragraph. Make it tiny; make it simple. Once a behavior is super easy to do, you don't need much motivation to do it.

Lastly, Prompt is the thing that reminds you to do what needs to be done. "If you don't have a prompt, you don't have behavior," Fogg claims. Prompts can be designed in various ways. If you're prompted but didn't do the behavior, the next thing you look at is Ability. Think about making it easier to do, how do you make it easier?

Fogg is a behavioral scientist and the founder and director of the Behavior Design Lab at Stanford University. He spent years creating products and consulting other companies to improve his employees' and customers' lives. After a frightful dream Fogg had one night, he decided to stop doing all the research and limit his other projects to focus on the book. He admitted the dream clarified his priorities and writing the book took "a huge effort."
