Did You Know?

Brit Bennett worked on The Vanishing Half: A Novel for around four to five years. The essence of the book was inspired by her mother who told her a story from her past about a small town wherein people intermarry so that their children would eventually have lighter skin tone.

B rit Bennett, one of todays emerging writers, was born and raised in South California. Both her parents, who are retired law enforcers, are very supportive of her passion. As an avid reader, it was her mother who instilled unto her the love for literature. Her mother always told her countless stories from her experiences back in the old days, which nourished the young mind of the future novelist. Bennett's works are products of personal experiences and are subtle reflections of the everyday struggles of persons of color living in modern-day society.

Bennett released The Vanishing Half: A Novel under Riverhead Books just last June 2020. The Vanishing Half is a highly acclaimed gem that chronicles the story of the Vignes identical twin sisters who lived their lives on opposite sides of the color spectrum. They are bound by blood but separated by the color of their skin. At the very young age of 16, Desiree and Stella felt that they had outgrown the small town they live in and decided to run away. Headed to New Orleans with no intentions of looking back, the twins scraped for every penny and tried their best to get by every single day.

One day, Stella, the twin who passes off as white, applied for a secretarial job in a high-end department store. She was subsequently hired without the management knowing her identity as a person of color. Stella desperately wanted the job, as it was the only way for her and her sister to not starve to death. Meanwhile, Desiree, the twin with the darker skin tone, was the only one who knew about Stella's secret. "White Stella", as Desiree called her, started working, and as the days went by, the sisters slowly drifted away from each other. Later on, Stella decided to leave Desiree for good to live the life she always wanted while Desiree tried to find Stella yet she failed, eventually she went back to their small town to start a life of her own. Fast-forward to the present, Desiree just got divorced with her black abusive husband Sam, and they had a dark-skinned daughter named Jude. Growing up, Jude had it rough for she was bullied and excluded and as soon as Jude went to college, she got for herself a catering job where she crossed paths with her aunt, Stella. The unexpected encounter with Jude left Stella dumbfounded. After years under the radar, it was revealed that Stella is married to her boss, Blake Sanders, a wealthy white man, and they have a blonde daughter with violet eyes named Kennedy. Kennedy grew up as a privileged white kid who had no idea about the roots of her mother. Jude applied to medical school while Kennedy pursued her calling as an actress. At a friends show, Jude approached Kennedy because she remembered she saw Kennedy with the woman that looked like her mother, Desiree. Kennedy later confirmed that it was her and her mother, Stella. Later in New York, Jude bumped into Kennedy and gave her a photo of their mothers. Immediately, Kennedy confronted Stella, Stella denied all of it but her daughter did not buy it for Kennedy was aware of the fact that Stella was a bit mysterious and secretive. Since Kennedy really wanted to be an actress, Blake and Stella gave her a year to try acting with their full support which resulted in her going to Europe. Due to her daughters confrontation, Stella went back to their old town and reconnected with Desiree. The Vignes twins have decided to make up for good and their mothers sake. Stella told Desiree about their daughters and later that night, Stella sneaked out because she was still not willing to leave the life she hardly worked for. In the end, Stella told her daughter the truth and convinced her not to tell her father. Without their mothers idea, Jude and Kennedy still managed to keep in touch, and Desiree has decided to move Houston
