PREFACE
TRW Inc. commissioned this book. The company had long sought to capture its story and had even launched history projects in the 1960s and 1980s. In the earlier effort, William Crowell, a member of TRW's Public Relations Department, gathered many files and records based primarily on the voluminous papers of Frederick C. Crawford, who led the company (then Thompson Products) between 1929 and 1958. Crowell apparently made little headway in writing, however, and the company eventually donated the papers to the Western Reserve Historical Society in Cleveland, where they are now housed.1
The history project of the 1980s, also carried out by TRW's Public Relations Department, was more modest in scope. It consisted of extended oral history interviews with leaders of the company, starting with Crawford and continuing with J. David Wright (chairman and CEO, 1958-1969), Horace Shepard (president, 1962-1969; chairman and CEO, 1969-1977), Dean E. Wooldridge (president, 1958-1962), Simon Ramo (executive vice president, 1958-1961; vice chairman, 1961-1978), and Ruben F. Mettler (president, 1969-1977; chairman and CEO, 1977-1988). The intention was to create a history of the company based on the edited recollections of these leaders. That project slowly metamorphosed into the present one, when TRW's top management agreed on the need to expand the oral history program to a much wider range of past and present employees and to set the company's story in a broader context. Accordingly, the company engaged The Winthrop Group, Inc. to produce this work.2
