Preface
Until the mid-1980s I was not particularly interested in small and medium-size companies; rather, my attention as an academic was directed toward larger corporations. However, when I met Professor Theodore Levitt of the Harvard Business School in Dsseldorf in 1986, we entered into a discussion of the continuing international export success of Germany. We soon agreed that it couldn't be attributed primarily to the large German companies, since they don't seem to differ much from their international counterparts.
A major root of Germany's continuing export excellence, we supposed, must lie with small and medium-size companies, particularly in the category of firms that are worldwide leaders in their markets. While scarcely known, these smaller businesses have excelled throughout the world for decades. Intrigued, I determined to discover what these market leaders are doing differently and to investigate them more thoroughly. Over the years I collected their names and came to call them hidden champions. Hidden they are, and often prefer to be, but they are assuredly champions. The large number I found came as a great surprise to meGermany alone is home to more than five hundred.
In the early years of my investigation, I thought that the hidden champion phenomenon was specifically German, rooted in a tradition of craftsmanship and pride in one's work. But in the course of time, I discovered such companies in almost every part of the world, ranging from the United States to Korea to South Africa to New Zealand. I

learned that all are amazingly similar. The same principles seem to point to success and market leadership everywhere. Therefore the lessons I present in this book, which have been well received in all parts of the world, are likely to be useful for any company, irrespective of its location or national origin.
