Home-Based Business Book
S ECOND E DITION
Dear Reader,
When we began our careers, we didn't expect to end up running our own home-based businesses but for more than a decade now, that's exactly what we've been doing. We've experienced firsthand the freedom and exhilaration that come from charting an independent course through the world of business, and we love it.
Along the way, we've been inspired by and learned from so many other people who are running their own businesses in many ways, this book is a chance for us to share much of that inspiration. If you're running your own business, or thinking of starting one, it's our hope that you'll find encouragement, practical advice, and perhaps even validation for your dreams within this book.
The best advice that we ever received in business was simply to believe in yourself that it makes all things possible. Now we're turning that advice over to you, along with a piece that comes direct from us: have fun because it makes it all worthwhile!
To Nanny, and in memoriam to Grandpa, for everything Yvonne Jeffery
Acknowledgments
One of the great joys in life is the company of family and friends.
This book owes much to Mum and Dad, as always, for their constant love, support, and encouragement, and to my sister, Lorraine Weyermann, for inspiring and supporting me in so many ways. To the Jefferys in England, much love and gratitude for being such an amazing part of my life.
I'd also like to thank Susan Yuzwak for a friendship full of strength, laughter, and understanding. To my long-time friends and fellow writers Judith Mulholland, Katharine Fletcher, Laura Byrne Paquet, and Linda Poitevin a girl couldn't ask for better. I'm constantly in awe of all that you accomplish in your lives.
I'm also grateful to my agent, Barb Doyen, for a wonderful working relationship, and to the staff at Adams Media who have guided this book into existence with such care.

Introduction
HOME-BASED BUSINESES aren't a new idea at all. Working where you live and living where you work was the natural order of things until the 1700s, when machinery began to make factories and mass production possible. From that point forward, people increasingly left their homes to go to work each day.
Well, technology has now come full circle. You can now link up electronically with almost anywhere in the world directly from your home and home can be a boat, the beach, or a mountain log cabin. No longer do you have to rely on local markets for your goods and services: The Internet gives you access to one of the most efficient and effective marketing channels ever created.
