Foreword
New Zealand is the most franchised country in the world. Its a fact that might surprise many people, but its true. According to the 2017 Survey of Franchising conducted by Massey University, there are 37,000 franchised units in this country. Thats one franchised unit for every 124 people.
Another surprising fact is that the overall turnover of the franchise sector is now estimated at $27.6 billion equivalent to 11 percent of New Zealands GDP. Add in motor vehicle sales and fuel retail, and it comes to $46.1 billion.
But perhaps the biggest surprise of all is that most of these franchises are not big international brands. When I founded Franchise New Zealand magazine back in 1992, franchising was a little-known concept in this country and we had just a handful of local operators. Today, over 70 percent of the 600-plus franchise brands operating in New Zealand are homegrown companies operating in all sorts of industries from home services to real estate, gourmet burgers to bookkeeping. Many have expanded overseas, not just to Australia but to the USA and beyond, and some are truly world class companies.
How have we got to this stage? Well, overnight success takes time, as they say, but it also takes visionaries who can see the advantages that franchising can offer. Combining big company buying power and branding with individual ownership and capital gives franchise companies the best of both worlds if they do it right. Building such a company requires not just a good idea but good advice, good support and great leadership.
In this book, you can read about how some of New Zealands best-known franchise brands were developed. There are tales of triumphs and disasters, of challenges met and of lessons learned. Above all, there are examples of how franchisors and franchisees work together to drive those brands forward. I applaud author Pete Burdon and the contributors for sharing their stories.
I often speak to people who are in the early stages of franchising their business, and others who have just bought into a franchise. I tell them that the more they learn and understand about franchising at the start, the more they will understand what to expect and the greater the success they will enjoy. This book can play a valuable part in that understanding, and I hope that you will find it both inspiring and educational.
