Introduction
The future of work is hybrid.
One survey by McKinsey highlights the fact that in the postpandemic future of work, nine out of ten organizations will be combining remote and on-site working.
Here are a couple of reasons why.
First, hybrid work combines the benefits of both on-site and remote work.
The advantages of on-site work include improved team collaboration, better social interactions, improved creative output, and more serendipitous discussions.
The advantages of remote work include better individual productivity, improved work/life balance, higher cost savings, more access to talent, and a lower carbon footprint.
Hybrid combines the best of these arrangements and maximizes the advantages of each. For example, your team members can get more serendipitous water-cooler discussions during in-office visits without sacrificing the improved work/life balance they gain while working from home.
Second, everyone now expects a hybrid work model.
Many surveys have been published about the fact that working professionals prefer a hybrid work arrangement that mixes home and office work.
Here are just a few of the findings:
- Harvard Business Review: Some 30% said the best place was their homes, and the remaining 55% favored a mix of home and officea hybrid model.
- IDEO: 86% of people expect their organization to adopt a hybrid work structure in 2021.
- The Atlantic: More than half of respondents said theyd ideally split their time between home and the office. (Only 19 percent said that full-time remote work was their ideal setup.)
In fact, employers who dont offer some form of hybrid arrangement may face an increase in turnover. This means that organizations might lose some of their most talented employees to other companies.
Thats because during the pandemic, people experienced what working remotely feels like, and they saw the benefits of a productivity increase while having a better quality of life. Those employees might end up leaving to a more hybrid-friendly organization if their current employer doesnt offer some flexibility.
A survey from Bloomberg revealed that among U.S. adults, 39% would consider quitting if their employers werent flexible about remote work. Among millennials and Gen Z, that figure was 49%.
Given the advantages of hybrid work, and the risk of not offering some form of hybrid work arrangement, its almost guaranteed that hybrid work will be the default way of working going forward.
Who is this book for?
This book is for team leaders and managers who want to prepare for the future of work. Its for team managers who want to learn more about leading and navigating through a hybrid work model in a new environment.
The book is organized into sections that cover a four-phase framework for building and managing a hybrid workplace. Phase 1 shows how to analyze your teams hybrid work arrangement, Phase 2 covers how to plan your teams hybrid work arrangement, Phase 3 focuses on how to manage your hybrid team, and Phase 4 covers how to evaluate your hybrid teams effectiveness.
The book is intentionally super-short because its boiled down to the essentials. I didnt want to waste your time with useless padding, so I removed any fluff that didnt add value.
