Renees Story

How many lawyers do you know who start a law firm while sleeping on a friends couch? Renee asked me.

Youre the first, I said. Tough job prospects right now?

Some lawyers find a job right after graduating law school. Thats not my story. Renee shook her head. But I didn't give up. I knew I could do it.

When Renee started out, she didnt have a website. She didnt have an advertising budget. She had nothing except her time, her laptop, and a new marketing ideaone very few lawyers knew about.

Most lawyers try to grow their law firms by talking about themselves, I said. Youve seen their TV ads and billboards. They talk about their years of experience, cases won, or settlement amounts.

Which I dont have yet.

...or need , apparently. I smiled.

Apparently.

People are pretty simple, I said. Were always going around thinking, Whats in it for me? We ask that about everything.

Including law firm ads, Renee said. Only problem is, most lawyers never answer that question. They assume people already know what lawyers like me can do for them. So, all I do is answer questions and educate people. Not only have people started trusting me, but a few even asked about my services!

Even though youre just starting out?

Even though Im just starting out. She repeated. Ive only been at this for a few months. Other lawyers have been in the business thirty or forty years!

So, how do you do it?

Well, my dream clients have always been online entrepreneurs, Renee said. I knew they needed help with legal issues around starting and running a business.

Other lawyers are probably targeting that market with the typical hire me, hire me ads all the time. How did you swoop in, differentiate yourself, and provide value?

Like I said, it started with answering their legal questions, she said. Did you know there are countless social media groups that consist solely of online entrepreneurs? They were perfect for me.

Renee gave me the whole scoop. She joined a dozen of these social media groups and read the members comments and questions.
